i'm optimistic too, not sure quite how we will handle their bowlers but think it could be close..2-1 either way.

Bairstow has got to be in the squad soon surely, he's a better player than when he first played for England, and is in some incredible form.
Forget keeping, he's a batsman good enough just on that alone.

Might he fit in the slightly problematic number 3 slot if Balance has a couple of low scores?

Looking in the predictions, there is either one hell of a lot of delusional Englishmen, or simply wishful thinking.

Looking at the poll, made up of mainly English forum members I imagine, only 28% think England will win on home turf and then only by the odd test. Hardly call that wishful thinking. Most other test countries would have a higher % of their local population expecting a win I imagine. Couldn't see India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Saffa even Kiwi fans being this pessimistic.

With the exception of the (exceptional) Ryan Harris, terrific bowler and the only Aussie since Gilchrist with a bit of class sadly retiring due to injury, most of the Aussies will be past natural old age by the end of the series and pensioned off. We do have some very nice retirement homes down on the South Coast here so it's a short trip after the series is over.

You do know we are in the middle of a heatwave in the UK? Bournmouth is just like Perth at the moment. :) :)

I think it will be close. The UK pitches and weather gives the England team an edge, which brings them closer to the Aussies.

I think a large part will come down to captaincy and managerial decisions which could go either way.

Aussies will probably scrape a 2-1 or 3-1. Maybe 2-2 and keep the ashes. I can see England doing well but not reclaiming them just yet.

Root and Broad to top bat and bowling for England.

Warner and Starc to top them for the Aussies.

Watson to retire mid-tour.

Balance or Bell to be swapped out after the second defeat.

Ali to become a decent spinner or replaced by Rashid.

Leading Aussie run scorer: Steve Smith
Leading Aussie wicket taker: Josh Hazelwood
Leading English run scorer: Joe Root
Leading English wicket taker: James Anderson
Series result: Eng 2-1
Man of the series: Ben Stokes
Other: Ben Stokes will be in the wickets and the runs, further enhancing his reputation as "the new Botham/Flintoff".
Ballance and Bell will be dropped after 3 tests for both averaging about 3, to be replaced by James Taylor and a returning Maverick.
David Warner to be fined 50% of his match fee at Lord's for being a c##t

you called me mental 2 months ago pal for saying i think England have a chance how things have changed Cam

I think I'm mad for saying England will win, more wishful thinking if I'm honest!
As it stands the series is 0-0 and anything could happen, for now I'm going to keep the faith!

We've had a week of good weather. It'll rain from now on. 0-0 could be the final score.

I have a bet with my barber. He has Aussies and I have England or the draw for the series. Loser buys a coffee.

Sorry to see people not giving England a chance. They are a young and amazingly talented team (I keep saying that). England takes the Ashes 3-1.

Aussie will win but should be close.

Interested to see how Root goes after last Ashes. Cook will go well.

Aussie bowlers too good though and will clean up the England tail quickly, so top order needs to do the business.

Stokes will be found out to be the very average player he is.

Stokes will spend most of the series huffing and puffing and looking like a beetroot.

  • If I only could bat....

I think the real question is going to come in relation to the Aussie quicks. If Johnson is able to bounce half the England team out purely through fear and the others are able to adjust length appropriately, then it could turn into a drubbing. As ever these days, winning the toss will be crucial.

For the first test, Jimmy and Moeen to bat out the last session on Sunday session to salvage a draw....

Mitchell Starc to be the leading wicket taker for Australia, with Lyon coming a surprise second; Mitchell Marsh to tear his hamstring and not be able to play the entire series (if he gets selected). Steve Smith to score the most runs for Australia.

Jimmy to be the leading wicket taker for England, but there will be a devastating spell from Broad in at least one of the tests; Stokes will have a Botham '81 match, probably at Trent Bridge or Edgbastond; Root to be the highest scorer for England. Moeen to get hit out of the park.

Evidently you don't watch much cricket.

None of Smith, Rogers, Voges or Hazelwood are sledgers. Pretty decent chaps one and all actually.

But, I am sure you have some pre-conceived notion that all Aussies must be boors.

I predict that the Aussies will petition the ECB to have the second Test moved to Chenai so we've got a pitch with some bounce in it...  :D
