Players who didn't live up to expectations/talent
« on: July 22, 2015, 02:08:48 PM »

Following on from the last few comments in the Ashes thread, I got to thinking about players who seem to have all the potential/talent in the world, but somehow will not be remembered as greats. Ramprakash and Bell were mentioned, and immediately for me (as a South African) Gibbs came to mind. He always made batting look easy, but lacked the application of a Kallis or even Kirsten. Cullinan too was greatly talented and dominated the domestic scene for a while, but never proved to be mentally up to the task at international level to be remembered as a great, even in SA.

Which players from other countries come to mind?

Simon Kerrigan! Although he was harshly treated in my opinion.

Shane Watson - made a career of making a pretty 30-40 odd then getting out LBW.

Ed Joyce - 3 hundreds in 52 ODIs, I honestly thought he'd have more than that.

I think for the West Indies Carl Hooper would have to be in there. Fantastic stylist but ended his career just as an average test player.

From England we have had quite a few
Mark Lathwell was a Somerset player who didn't even get off the ground at test level and great things were predicted for him at  aged 21

Glen Chapple, a major "what if?" on the international front.

Jimmy Adams 4 hundreds in his first 14 tests, 6 in 54 tests overall.

That's slightly different - Chapple wasn't given the opportunity to succeed as he wasn't picked.

Matthew Maynard.  And, who knows, perhaps Tom too...?

Does this include players who forced their way in through weight of runs, but the selectors didn't really fancy them?

Yep Matt Maynard, stunning natural timer of the ball, didn't do much in a brief International career

and Tom for sure, RIP that was a crying shame and a waste of a lad with major talent.

Ramprakash is the first England player that springs to mind

Would definitely go with Graeme Hick personally (only at international level mind!!).

You could argue KP too...
