So Steve Smith the new captain of Australia,

What is everyone's opinion on this?

Very difficult to look at anyone in that side with the capability of being a captain (including Smith).

The majority of the team are on the verge of retirement leaving a very young and inexperienced side behind them, the Aussies seems to have a wonderful way of going missing when their team is struggling.

Smith seems to have bottled under the pressure of being the top batsmen and moving to number 3, barring his 200 at Lords, he appears to have really struggled.

The one thing I will never forget, and I hope is never forgotten by the media is his comments regarding England.

I can't wait to get over there and play another Ashes against England in their conditions after beating them so convincingly in Australia," Smith said. "It's going to be nice to go in their backyard. If we continue to play the way we have been playing over the last 12-18 months, I don't think that they'll come close to us to be honest."

Needs to go on a "talking to the media" course and trot out some of Cook's clich�s.

I think it's a great choice... He will drive the team forward and lead by example...

As for Aussies going missing when their team is struggling you are absolutely ludicrous... I've never seen a country abandon their team like the English when they are struggling.... Just go back and read some of the topics before this ashes series... Then when they perform you all come out of the woodwork saying I told ya so!!!!

I've noticed a huge change in Cook's attitude towards the press and media and his responses. Much less scripted and not as rehearsed (not least his quip about Bayliss only just rocking up so don't give him too much credit). Completely down to Bayliss and Farbrace and the environment they've created and it's incredibly refreshing. Cook needs to take credit for having an honest look at himself. Takes a brave man to do that in any walk of life.

I think it bodes well for the future and for Cook's captaincy and career. He's outskippered Clarke and been more inventive. No one would've predicted that pre-Ashes.

Smith I would think has learnt a huge lesson regarding his game and the need to be able to play on all surfaces and in all conditions. Big learning curve coming up for him as skipper and as a player. As a pom I hope he does, he certainly has the ability.

A little harsh but losing teams tend to fall apart overseas a little. India always seem to have 3 players injured very quickly when they tour England. Swann did a massive bottle on the aus tour. It happens and its not surprising.

I wasn't referring to the fans.

I was referring to the players within the losing team.

This is even more prevalent after Warner's comments about "rabbits caught in the headlights" So what were the Aussies in the 60 run innings? They did a pretty good job at hiding during the last test match. Including the pantomime dame M.Johnson.

The difference between England fans and Australian fans is that, the English expect to lose and winning often comes as a nice surprise, hence the arrogance.

Whereas the Aussies seem to think they have a divine right to win every game of cricket they play in and can't accept losing, this comes across in the players, management and commentators.

The only thing the last two Ashes series have shown is that home advantage is the difference between winning and losing.

I think its harsh to say he bottled it, i think he faced some good bowling in conditions he isnt used to and was found out, i really dont think he "bottled" it

Yep that's right L21. We set high standards it's what makes us Australian. We had the same attitude helping you guys in both world wars.

I'm not 100% sure how much the World Wars have to do with who will be the next Australian Cricket captain, but for what it's worth I think Smith is the best man for the job.

At no point did I say he shouldn't be captain!

Nor, did I mention the valued efforts on the Australians in the war.

I just wanted views on his selection as captain.

Personally I think there wasn't any choice and that it has landed at his door whether he likes it or not.

The only reason I say he bottled it is because the way that he was being shown by the media was as if he wouldn't get out all series. He definitely didn't come across as one of the better Australian players (Lords aside)

i like the choice as captain. seems like a decent enough bat (except in england)

also young enough that he can lead the team for a few years.

The difference between the England team and the Aussies is that they don't try and create a myth of invincibility as the Aussies did in the runup to this series .

Out of the Aussies who are reasonably safe in their place in the side for the next 18 months he is the best candidate by far. Warner, Johnson or Lyon as vice captain?

Smith looks prat in hindsight but lets face it, there were probably eight England players who made similar comments before the last series in Australia. He has struggled against the moving ball, yes, and its a given that he will not continue to be quite as prolific elsewhere as he was the last eighteen months or so...but he hasn't suddenly become terrible overnight, just less the superhuman some Australians made him sound like.
