Does anyone know on avg how much top level loam is and how much you need for 9 wickets? I've got 10 bags for each wicket.

Also, anyone know where we can hire a deep airiator from

Make sure loam is compatible with loam used.

Need 8-10 bags per pitch.

Try local golf clubs may have scarifier/deep aerator not in use.

between £5-£6 per bag depending on which exact loam.

i was quoted about £4.25 a bag but that only for mendip loam which is at the lower end of the scale.

i'll send you a pm @ProCricketer1982 so somebody who might be able to help with the aerator

Funnily enough I was just looking up prices about 20 mins ago.

Depends on the loam, but roughly £4.50 ish a bag I'd say. You need around 8/10 bags per strip.

We get ours delivered in huge bags that require a crane to offload from the truck. We only use four bags for our 10 tracks

We use Ongar loam which we have delivered in 25kg bags. We join together with a few other clubs in the area to share delivery cost. They work out around a fiver a bag and we usually order around 100 for 12 tracks.
It may be more economical to buy large 1 tonne bags but you may find it hard to spread it if becomes wet.

Just for background, we have a civil service sports grin d it the groundsman is t really a cricket man. He just piles different layers on etc. so, I'm trying to cost out how much it'd be to basically dig down, clear it out and redo it.. Get some life into the wicket as its on the slow side and I'd prefer pace and bounce. Would need to clear the top few inches off, drill, spike and then put down enough to back fill

I've built a square from scratch before. It was built on a gravel carpet of around 150mm thick. The loam was put on 250-300mm thick. It was laid in 50mm layers and compacted well, then trimmed then the next layer put on. The square was then hand raked and seeded. Can't remember how many strips it was, possibly 6-7. We probably used 250 tonne of loam, think it was ongar at around £100/tonne delivered on Arctics so a fair cost to totally renew.

When I go to work in the morning I'll see if I can dig out the costs, might not be too accurate as it was probably 6 years ago

If you could that'd be great.

I suspect it's a few k but tbh.. He club has the money, a millionaire player who says he'll double what the club put in.. Seems a good time to do it

We don't really specialise in it, we do more synthetic & natural rugby and football pitches but this was part of a decent sized job, you need some pretty specialist equipment for the levelling, sort of stuff that people who build golf greens/tees would have. You want the pitch to be really flat before you seed it

@ProCricketer1982 I have had a look back through the details. We installed a square big enough for 7 wickets (22.56m long x 3.05 per strip) gave approx 500m2. We installed a drainage system around the perimeter linked to a gravel carpet 150mm deep. We then installed a geotextile and then the loam in 5 comapcted layers 250mm thick overall. The wicket was then raked and seeded by hand. This was back in 2007, total cost for that was around £23,000 at the time. We were on the site doing a much bigger job so there would be additional mobilisation costs for someone to come to just redo the square. We used around 220 tonnes of loam which we sourced from Boughton, the loam is around 1.6 tonnes per m3. Not sure what the bulk cost of the loam would be now, we got it delivered on artic tippers.

Cool, 30k is t too and then (allowing for inflation and a few extras). Would be nice to have a nice bouncy deck that finds people without a back foot game out

This gives some guidelines for the new construction. According to this you could get away with 125mm of loam by putting some rootzone on top of the gravel layer. This would save a few quid.
