I don't buy the safety argument in this instance as Bairstow pummelled a 85mph Wahab Riaz bouncer for 6, only minutes earlier.

England would of done exactly the same as Pakistan, so I have no complaints.

However these situations should be handled better by the ICC and looking into run rate penalties if the over rate slips is one angle. To keep it simple, the third umpire should inform the on field umpire when an over is lost and the current run rate rounded up should be applied for the lost over in the form of penalty runs. The other thing is to allow floodlights to be used for a maximum of 30 minutes to finish the game, hopefully still making it playable for both teams before it gets dangerous.

I do like the bucknor school of umpiring though. Waste time and you'll stay out here until we made it up!

I think England would of got home in 3/4 more overs.

Have you tried facing a 135km/85mph bowler in the dark with a scuffed up red ball? It's for the batsman's safety.

Played prem level and championship cricket for over 10 years and faced many 80odd mph bowlers at start and end of season when gets darker earlier, normally get my stumps removed but that's why I still play club and not international cricket mate.

Personally as a cricket fan think the law is flawed and Pakistain betrayed the gentlemans way to play the game, I know its international cricket etc and England may have done the same just don't think its right.

No sanctimonious bs please. They went off at a fair time and we would have wasted as much time.
Amazing we got as close as we did.

Agreed. It was ultimately within the rules of the game. We drew, and I guess we were lucky to get as close as we did. Would have been very nice to have a 1-0 lead though.

No bs at all mate, just don't personally agree with it, after the verdict on sky they had a cricket classic back to Karachi in 2000 and umpires basically punished Pakistan for time wasting maybe that should have happened again but I get and respect the rules that a consistent approach was followed all the way through

There should be a punishment for timewasting regardless of side.

I enjoy watching cricket and id be frustrated if England were doing it.

Maybe an over rate thing for last two hours of game, regardless if I result can happen or not.
Something similar to t20 were you get penalty runs added to your score(remember Yorkshire Lancashire t20 2014, Yorkshire was gonna lose until the runs were added for slow over rate)

Some of these comments about Pakistan time wasting are pathetic. We'd do exactly the same and did do in Cardiff during the ashes when Shafayat kept bringing spare pairs of gloves out every over.

Over rates are a different story though, something seriously needs to be done. I watched the start of the first couple of days before leaving for work and it was terrible. 10-11 overs an hour. Theireshould be penalty runs applied across the board.

Yep!! As annoying as it is, time for a few members to get off their high-horses and accept that it's part of the game, we would have done it, and until the umpires have the balls to step in and move things along, nothing will change.

I think we ended up doing far better than I thought, and I'm delighted for Rashid.

England should be proud of not succumbing to the scoreboard pressure, like the Aussies. Yes, a few extra minutes could have helped, but thats just luck. So many things could have added up to provide that extra time - a faster run rate when England was batting, one less review, etc etc.
Just plain old bad luck. No point making things distasteful by talking about the "spirit" of the game (EVERY single team, including England.. has done, and will do, what Pak were doing towards the end).

So..lets just look at the next two tests - clearly, its not going to be a dull series.

Totally agree with the above (brokenbat comment) Any team would have tried everything they know to delay things if they were looking down the barrel of defeat!! Pakistan are no different than any other competitive team! We just needed an extra 10-20 minutes or so to knock the last few runs off but it just wasn't meant to be!
We can say "if only......" and if this person had of done this, and if that person hadn't of done that....but we drew the first Test which isn't a bad thing!
From being hammered last time we played Pakistan in these conditions, we are suddenly looking a lot stronger! We batted well. And if even 1 of the Bell catches from the first innings had been held and Broad hadn't of overstepped, then Pakistan wouldn't have put on too many runs!! So this is proof that they are beatable in these conditions! And that England can bat and bowl in these conditions - so those are massive the positives that we need to take from this game!
Looking at Pakistan's record here - if I had of been offered this draw in the first Test, I would have taken it!! So hopefully England can continue to build on this!  :)
