I think we are in a lot better shape than the last time we came over to the UAE.

We have the squad flexibility to be able to sort an eleven out that includes 3 spinners, 3 seamers and bats down to 8.

I don't think that Trev and Farbs are as one-eyed and methodical as some of their predecessors so I'm prepared to see what they come up with.

Yes people like Hales and Jos might get a rough deal, but form does play a part, and the coach has to pick the best eleven for the conditions tomorrow.

I AM A GLOWING ORB OF POSITIVITY!!

Last time we were here we were number 1 in the world had Swann and Panasar and a settled first choice team...

I suppose at least this time Ajmal isn't allowed to throw it.

My team would be very similar to those mentioned by everyone else, we should all clearly be selectors.

1: Cook*
2: Hales
3: Bell
4: Root
5: Taylor
6: Stokes
7: Bairstow
8: Moeen
9: Rashid
10: Broad
11: Anderson

Bats down to 10 (maybe, kinda, just, that 169 seems a long time ago doesn't it!) and has 3 seamers 2 spinners and a Root.

I think there is a decent argument for Broad getting the chop for Wood. Broad has form, getting dropped in India for being rubbish. Then I looked at cricinfo:-

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/10617.html?class=1;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;home_or_away=3;opposition=25;opposition=6;opposition=7;opposition=8;orderby=default;template=results;type=bowling

Averages 20 with the ball in the UAE. I'll get my coat...

I don't really get the Broad-doubting, I know he comes across as a bit of a tool sometimes but I don't think you can argue with his performances or stats, has a marginally better average and strike rate than Anderson and similar economy rate?

Cricinfo reporting that Wood and Buttler will be playing. 6 man bowling attach with 4 seamers. An out of form keeper/batter to go with an allrounder who hasn't scored a run in the UAE (Stokes not Samit but you could swap them for the same result). That should work lol

So glad the England Management have a handle on the conditions. Lets hope they know something we don't! I assume they will bowl first then....

Yasir Shah is also out according to the telegraph.

We all know Ali  is not an opener and Hales is a big risk as a test opener but who else can England turn to to open with Cook.
England are going around in circles time to give a new guy a go  tell him to play without fear and give him a run in the side.

Err wasn't that  Robson  and Lyth?. Any chance Strauss can come out of retirement.

You know who did get a ton in the UAE opening the batting and went quite well....KP.

Cook is boring enough. Fair point in hindsight and he wasn't too bad in India.

My thinking of an ideal batsman to open with Cook is also KP.......but it won't happen!
Gutted about it! And the fact that nobody else seems to be succeeding in that slot makes it even more frustrating  >:(
So Hales it is....probably!

Hales will get a go in South Africa - there's no way Ali can consistently open and be the top spinner.  You have to give credit to Bayliss and Farbrace for a bit of lateral thinking.  We're not criticising them for selecting more bowlers in the UAE, it's precisely the same principle - horses for courses.

Ideally we would have two openers who can play all conditions well, but we don't.  I want Hales to play and succeed as much as the next man, but for whatever reason he hasn't been selected previously and, probably based on a lot more than any of us have seen of him against spin bowling, they're going with Moeen and I'll bet, given the workload Moeen will have, they really don't fancy Hales in this series.

Buttler, I don't know.  Bairstow is in better form with the bat, I don't know whether he's a better keeper.  I guess they have invested in this young side and acknowledged publicly months ago that there will be ups and downs in all player's development.  If you start dropping players you've invested in and gained trust from, do we get the same situation as we have with openers, in that players think they have 1-2 series if they don't perform?  That can only lead to added pressure for young players at the start of their test careers.  Bigger picture, I'd take a couple of series of under performing (and that's all it is with Buttler) for him to come out stronger.  For Buttler and Stokes to consistently perform in all areas at their age is a big ask - I say stick with them.  We don't want to get back to the 90s where you had a bad session and were dropped.

Lyth kept making the same mistakes, Robson had a clear technical flaw, Compton spat his dummy about the coaches (rightly or wrongly, don't do it in public...).  But I think in Buttler we all acknowledge he's a potential world beater - Gilchrist-like.  I wouldn't want to start messing with his head too much at the start of his career.

Apparently Cook has said in an interview moeen will definately open as it means they can play six bowlers.

That'll mean no Taylor and 4 seamers.
