New Bat
« on: November 07, 2015, 02:20:56 PM »

I have used Salix bats since 1996 when I went to the factory and ordered a Royal.  In that time  I have had four Salix bats. The Royal, Supernatural, Praestantia and another Praestantia.  The first Praestantia was a dud and I sold it. The second  Praeastantia was the best bat I have had and with two refurbishments it lasted eleven seasons, but this year it finally died and chunks of wood came off the middle when I removed the  layers of nylon bat tape.  I did  think about filling it with plastic padding and plastering more  tape round it but decided  to go for a new bat.

 A Sps  2lb 9 Kudos number 1  and a 2lb 8  Millichamp MH87 came and were returned for refunds.
The balance of the Kudos was too low for me. The Millichamp was better but the handle was too thin and the double ribbed grip I added brought the weight to 2lbs 10 which was too heavy for  my square of the wicket shots off the back foot.

I decided to go for a Bradbury Forte Exception from Barrington sports.  Being an old fogey I am not keen on the garish decals of certain bats and a lot of the names either.
I much prefer the simple decals of the Bradbury.   Salix decals are excellent as well.

Anyway, the Bradbury is a super pick up for me. It is 2lbs 8 with a high middle. I took their grip off and put on a gold Salix ribbed one.
I have always used traditional looking bats. The trend for large edges wasn't around when I bought my last Salix in 2004, it has edges of about 16mm.

The widest part of the Bradbury's edges are about 25mm, profile about 46mm.  It has a lovely deep sound when bouncing a ball and using a very old  mallet on a thin cane handle.

At my age (61 November 25th) I didn't think I would be buying a new bat. I was going to use my  second hand M & H Original, bought in 2005  as a wet weather and net bat, but I thought what the heck, I am very fit and have a good few years left to play.

Thanks.

Sometimes the fielding is a bit of a bind but I am still seeing the ball very well when I bat. I just need a pitch where the ball comes on, am hopeless on the stodgy pitches.

Welcome to the forum, just out of personal curiosity, why not another Salix?

Welcome to the forum, just out of personal curiosity, why not another Salix?

Thanks.

I suppose  I consider Bradbury to be a niche bat maker, just as Salix was when I had my Royal in 1996.  Only one other player at my club has a Bradbury.

I had my eye on a couple of Salix bats on Ebay but one went for silly money, especially as it was second hand.

A Pod player's 2lb 7 for £167.  My maximum was going to be £132 but I went up to £162.
There was a re-conditioned  2lb 7 Pod 1, but then the Bradbury arrived  and it felt so good that I kept it.

The Pod 1 went for £82 + carriage. The winner had put in another bid on top so who knows how much that was.
My maximum was going to be £110. The Bradbury was £283.50.

Thanks.  Good to see you're keeping going as well.

I have bought a fair amount of kit as well in the past couple of years.

I was holding onto the bat for so long because it suited me so well, but it had to be retired.

Just noticed your stats theu are excellent I've played 50 conscecutive seasons and nowhere near 35000 plus runs.

My stats are from when I was 16. I was a rubbish batsman in my teens. Twenty was a good score.

I didn't score my first fifty until I was 22, first ton when I was 28.  25 tons in 23 years, none for the last nine seasons, but came close with 97* on a Sunday game in 2009.

Best season was when I was 42.  40 innings, 7 not outs, 1724 runs, 11 fifties, 3 centuries, average 52.24

I played a lot of golf when I was young and was pretty good, got to 5 handicap.

One winter (I think that was the winter after I made my first fifty) we netted at Alf Gover's cricket school. He was wandering about in whites  and was wearing  his England sweater.
He watched me for a few moments and said you play golf don't you. My back lift was far too stiff, it wasn't  going in the correct direction and various other things were wrong. He said pick the bat up as if you're playing a bunker shot and keep your right elbow close to your body.

That advice was the best I have had.

My last round of golf was in 1999  but the thousands of  practice balls I've hit over the years hit still affects my batting in that the right hand sometimes takes over when I am off driving and it results in a horrible pulled drive to the bowler or a mistimed shot which goes nowhere.

I had a GN bat at one time from the Alf Glover cricket school he produced some great  players.                                                     Play with a couple of guys   who also play golf there off drive is a joy to watch.
