West Indies spinner Sunil Narine has been banned from bowling in international cricket after his action was judged to be illegal.

An independent assessment ruled that the 27-year-old bent his elbow beyond the 15-degree limit in all variations of his deliveries.

Narine was reported during this month's third one-day game against Sri Lanka.

He is the number one bowler in the world rankings for one-day and Twenty20 internationals.

An International Cricket Council statement said: "Narine's international suspension will also be recognised and enforced by all national cricket federations within domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction."

However, the world governing body added that he may be able to play domestically in the West Indies with the consent of the West Indies Cricket Board.

Narine was twice reported for a suspect action in September and October while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Champions League Twenty20.

He withdrew from the West Indies squad for this year's World Cup in order to spend time remodelling his action.

Great to see them completely clamping down on this at long last. I see it as the first step back towards wrist spin becoming the primary form of attacking spin again which is something everyone wants to see instead of this chucking rubbish. It's hard to believe they've got away with it for so long. I'd like to know the maximum flex he achieved, can't imagine it was as bad as ajmals 40 degrees!!

Glad to see the ban, he's a chucker and it needs stamping out because it's becoming more the norm at county level (glow bowler for example).

Murali wasn't banned because his arm didn't flex by 15 degrees
He had a problem with his elbow that meant that he couldn't get it straight, so it was bent the same amount the whole rotation

Maybe, but most of the time he chucked it.
I watched him at Lord's and they showed a super slow mo of his action. It was a massive throw. That replay was never shown again!

Don't think narine is too bothered...probably made 5M + chucking it. Not bad if you ask me

Doesn't take an expert to realise who's chucking it...just test the spinners wearing full sleeve tops to cover the bend

The fact he's made money while chucking only shows up the West Indies board (for not picking it up themselves) and the ICC for not stamping it out at the start . Can't blame him personally because he's minted and that's all people care about.

The 15 degrees rule didn't come into effect untill after he was called for chucking.
At the time that Murali was reported for a suspect action, the permissible extension stood at 5 degrees for spinners

And now a shed load of spinners are paying the price for trying to copy him and his 800 strikeouts. Amazing how many are getting tested and banned since murali packed up

to be fair, Narine's action looked more natural than many, and he never really took wickets by excessive turn, o much as unpickable variations on a theme of six inches either way.

It was to prevent everyone being banned, they tested a load of bowlers at the time and found the only bowler below 5 degrees was Ramnaresh Sarwan! McGrath was at 11 degrees I think from memory for example and he's Mr textbook, so the rules were changed to say 15 degrees, which is supposedly the point at which the bend becomes visible to the naked eye.
