Where do you like to field?
« on: December 03, 2015, 12:22:22 PM »

Sadly as I'm getting older I am unable to perform Johnty Rhodes/Trevor Penny style fielding at backward or cover point. I also have an arm like a 3 year old girl, after a shoulder operation.  I need to find a new fielding position so was thinking about becoming a specialist mid on fielder.  I'm never that keen on the slips as you often have to make small talk with the wicket keeper, who as we all know is often the oddest member of the team.

So where does everyone else like to field?

Point. I always fielded there as a youngster and you get used to the sort of shots that lead to catches coming your way, you get used to the way the ball spins in the air/along the ground as it comes to you. I also find youngsters stand too deep in this position as they are scared of the cut shot. Winds me right up.
Alternatively third man, though my shoulder means I can't throw it as far/hard as I used to be able to. You can have a good chat to the spectators and have little to do. Lovely.

When I'm not keeping, 2nd slip. Not because I'm lazy, more cause I genuinely feel I'm best there.

Can't stand 1st slip, think too much like a keeper.

Absolutely hate being at square leg, flicks or sweeps and pulls are a nightmare, its either full blooded or squirming away with the dreaded second bounce spin.

Point or Gully. As @Gurujames, always fielded there however, on occasions I fielded at leg gully / backward short leg for specific bowlers batsmen during matches

Bat a bit. Bowl a bit. Not too bad at point either!

Mid off, me and our mid on are both 6"5 and catch a surprising amount of poorly timed drives down the ground! Also do a bit in the slips, but I'm not overly fussy.

3rd man/fine leg alone if i'm having a bit of a blinder and need to be somewhere where I can't do much damage.

3rd man/fine leg to mid on/off is my usual fielding pattern as I often have to cover for shoddy keeping and slips that never chase the ball if it goes behind, and i'm a fairly useful distraction at mid on/off as batsmen tend to assume that i'm rubbish and try to hoof it over my head, only to end up out.

Gully/leg gully if i'm feeling aggresive and the captain allows me to field there, often when the spinners are on and fielding at fine leg is pointless.

I would have said fine leg if you could throw but mid on is a good choice as you can watch the bat and move to the left or right to get your body behind the ball and the  non strikers stumps and  your bowler will be close to throw the ball at.

Given the choice 1st slip - but so long as I am not at point or square leg I don't mind.

In my mind I'm like AB De Villiers, but in reality I'm more of a Monty Panesar! Because of this I'm hidden.
I'm usually stationed at mid on or mid off to start, but also lurk at square leg or mid wicket.

My favourite position is in the bar, but that isn't always appropriate  :-[

Cover or mid wicket if there is on offy bowling. At least you can stay involved, try and get in the batters head a bit or help the bowler out as you tend to get a good idea of what the batter is trying to do.

As a bowler though and someone with a half decent arm I spend way too much time at 3rd/fine for my liking, usually grumbling to myself about the worst umpiring decision I've ever seen, the miracle of both batters having horseshoes up their (No Swearing Please) or how our groundsman can only prepare roads.

Always fielded in the covers when young. Fine leg when bowling.

Now I am old, mid on specialist !

Bowl and over, stand at 1st slip the next, Captains prerogative.

Prefer not to be square of the wicket, I'm no use at point or square leg. Usually field slip or mid-off, prefer midwicket to cover. Also quite like boundary riding towards the end of the innings.
