G'day everyone,

I am currently having a discussion with Laver & Wood about this.  Planning to get a bat that is 10cm wide instead of 10.8cm as per the usual.  Reason being I would rather use the extra .8cm with beefier edges and middle for a given weight (2.10).  I am guessing 4mm either side is not going to make much of a difference (if I am edging it on a regular basis, there's a bigger problem and its not the bat) and the narrower blade should help with slightly higher bat speed provided the pick up is good.

What do you guys/girl think?

Difference in bat speed would be negligible

Edge size and middle size have a mainly placebo effect on performance in my opinion

I'd rather have a bat as wide as possible personally

Wouldn't a better option be full width, thinner edges and a full back rather than a narrower bat and unnecessary edges?

Rk made me a Harrow width joker style bat.


I don't believe the width had any effect on my innings when I used it. Mainly as it was sailing over cover for six out of the middle

Just get a harrow. I've got a H4L NV harrow that weighs 2.9 as my match bat for last season. It goes very well and it's just psychological about the width being less. I'm not very tall though, so this might be an issue if you are.

I use a 4 inch wide Harrow bat  and don't really see any difference to a standard S/H Losing over 3 inches or 8cm  off the width of a  standard  4 1/4  S/H wide bat seems to narrow.

What is the width difference between a SH & a Harrow in real terms? Isn't it approximately 2 thorough refurbs (but most on here don't keep a bat long enough for it to need 2 end of season refurbs lol)

The difference between a Harrow and a SH isn't noticeable straight away, I actually leant a Harrow to a teammate a couple of seasons back and he didn't notice until he compared it to a Short Handle in the same model.

That said, the idea of a SH length size 6 Width is a bit daft to me, but I need a bat as wide as I can get haha

So you'd rather have a smaller surface area that's intended to hit the ball in order to have more wood on the edges and rear where you try not to hit the ball 🤔

^^^ Now that you put it that way... Going with the regular width.  My timing is more dependent on how many beers I have had the night before.

I think we are all guilty of wanting massive edges/profiled bats these days. Some of the biggest 6's I've hit are with traditional shaped bats with small edges and the bulk of the wood in the middle. My old lavers and SCATS certainly scored me the most runs of any bats I have owned.

Does it stop me wanting a huge bat? No. But when I think back nothing beats a well pressed, traditional shaped bat that I can still lift after batting for a couple of hours (this hasn't happened for a while haha)

i've been thinking this myself. This fashion of huge deep lightweight bats. Isn't it the speed and weight behind the ball combined with timing that gives you the speed of the ball off the bat
