He was massively average when messer flintoff took him apart. He was dropped and went back to shield cricket. He has changed his technique and since coming back has done very well Except when the ball is moving, then he looks avg again (same as most modern players). To sum up, again the back drop of modern players who are in the most part white ball players he is one of the best. Is he a patch on some players of yesteryear ?? No in my opinion but the game is more white ball orientated even in tests than before so tbh, you can't compare modern players with your pontings, heydens, langers, martyn etc.

Root is a different player to smith, totally different style. Root has just as many weaknesses as smith (outside off stump early on which as he keeps being touted as a top order bat is horrendous).

Both are modern batsmen so let's just judge them against those around now. Avg 50+ now is not comparable to a ponting/Lara/kallis etc

Flintoff took him apart? Lay off the sauce my friend. Smith wasn't dismissed by Flintoff in the 2010/11 Ashes

Stand to be corrected but I don't recall month Rhodes pulled up any trees with the bat but was a stunning fielder.
Some of the stuff Jordan can do is up there with Jonty....

I see what you're saying but can't see Jordan averaging anywhere near the 35ish that Rhodes did.

Fair point I didn't know Jonty's stats...that's pretty good if it's 35 ish... I don't recall Rhodes bowling although Jordan is a bit buffet with the ball.before he hurt his back I believe Jordan was genuinely quick. It's a bit up and down now thou

I'd also say that Jonty had a strong team around him - England are not yet the finished article and can't afford to be carrying one member for his fielding alone.

His runs aren't needed and his bowling is currently not up to snuff. Hoik him out and give Broad or Woakes a trundle - nether would weaken the side from where it is now.

Don't think Rhodes bowled, someone else might be able to confirm though. My comparison isn't 100% fair either because Rhodes batted higher up the order than Jordan but my point stands haha! Jordan has some desirable attributes for white ball cricket (gun fielder, hits a long ball, seems to have a decent yorker) but at the moment he offers considerably less than Plunkett would.

Rhodes' average of 35 might not seem 'world class' but SA used to have Boucher, Klusenar and Pollock whom could all smash it.
