it's wavy lines going across the grain to look for, at least that what Salix told me when I picked out a couple of the bargain bats a couple of years ago. They explained why it's impossible to know how long they will last and were therefore discounted

I've also seen those markings on full price bats thou so it's not practically possible for the batmaker/retailer to pick out every one of these bats, I do look for it now when buying a bat but they are so fine I wouldn't of noticed before it was explained to me......

The storm damage patterns in the willow  can go unnoticed until the bat is near completion

Obviously its not the bat makers fault but where does the owner stand with the bat? Should they be able to send it back to the maker for a replacement or do they wait for it to break and hope its within the warranty timeframe?

In this instance the bat will be coming back to me, as I sold it to Chad, totally a unaware of any of the issues he has since found, it was my idea to put the thread up, I just wanted to hear everybody else's views on it really...

Shame, but these things happen I guess..

good of you to sort it out. Any batmakers can get caught out with this issue, it's happened to quite a few un- knowingly. There's one or two who charge very high prices for these type of bats which is questionable but the majority are generally sympathietic(I my experience)
Hope you have some sort of resolution yourself with this. It's sourced form one of the best, that might help

Actually if anybody wants to take a punt on it, with its issues, it may still make a net bat I guess?  Then make me an offer, I will get Chad to post it to you, then I will refund Chad the difference...please be sure to read the entire thread, as now we know it's issues, it will be a bought as seen sale..

Thanks..

actually this sort of thread is why the sales section on here is so good compared to ebay and other sites....there's very few issues  and most members(whilst maybe wanting to make money) also want fellow cricketers to get a decent bat or bit of kit....

On the plus side.....if you end up keeping the bat there's nothing set in stone to say it's gonna break, but yes it's far more likely to.

I had a year out of my storm damaged salix, and a team mate had it for a year after that before it broke.  so not bad....but I knew it was storm damaged when I bought it and it was massively discounted.

I would put a face sheet on it as it will help prevent the bat breaking and well done Mel for taking the bat back.

While I agree to an extent, I get the feeling with storm damage that if it's gunna go it'll go, adding facesheets/tape etc meerly prolong the inevitable.

And going back a few posts about storm damages bats always being lookers. My theory on this is that "lookers" have more grains. More grains means slower growth, and as the Willow has been outside longer it is exposed to more extreme weather than a quick growing tree, so the chances of it sustaining storm or wing damage age increased
