I'm all for giving players time (see Woakes earlier in this thread and posts across the board), but Compton's not learning.  He's as intense, playing ill-judged shots following pressure he's building on himself.  Test cricket is a high pressure environment and I don't think he's suited to it.  If he was on the brink of being dropped after SA, then the selectors know it.

Compton hasn't remedied the problems that got him dropped in the first place.  That's the problem.

well batted Hales, a ton would of been great but he's showed he can get his head down and graft.

how easy does Joe Root make batting look?

It was look at the stats didn't Root have a strike rate of 37 or something in his first year in tests, rising to 50 in the second year and 70 odd in the third?
If this is the case for Hales, he may end up being our "Warner"

You only need look at Vince and Compo together at the moment!
Even if Vince doesn't hit a decent score today (hope he does being a Hampshire born follower) you can still see the difference.
Compo looks apprehensive and very much out of form. And then look at Vince and although there will be a few nerves there, he looks a lot more in form in comparison?
That first boundary was a high quality shot!

Vince proving he's style over substance imo.

Nice to see Moeen get the chance to actually bat, rather than be stuck in a counter attacking role. Fingers crossed for him tomorrow.

Quite impressed with Vince today, he looks worth a run in the side.  The Yorkshire lads, Root and Bairstow stole the show though.

Compton...I have to agree he looks so stressed by the whole thing.  If he faced that attack in county cricket, I'd have £50 on him to make a ton.  Call it a test match and I'd have the same money on him to make less than 20.

Only question is who comes in?  We need someone solid, but ideally a bit less stodgy than Nick.  Be a really good time for Lyth or Robson to make another ton, or for young Joe Clarke to smash it around.

I think all Compton needs is a score as hes apprehensive at the crease and he will be okay  also it was a great catch to get him out.

The Sri Lankan keeper has kookaburra gloves but (I think it was) SG pads. I'm uneasy with this!!

SF pads, anyone else notice Woakes's gloves, look like an all white pair of the old E41s cook used to use.

Time to go now, Mo. 400 is more than enough for SL, anything over that is gravy.

Moeen Ali must dream of facing this hopeless Lankan attack all the time. So bad he's managed two Test hundreds against them...

Just embarrassing from SL. Bangladesh would have put up a better fight.
No wonder test match cricket is dying, who wants to watch this rubbish, no contest at all. Should have given NZ 5 test matches this summer!
