Steyn was what number 1 bowler for 5/6 years until philander stole his crown. Neither Broad, Ashwin or Anderson are anyway near the level of Steyn.

but they are thou....they are near the level of Steyn. The South African has been the stand out bowler of the last few years, Anderson and Broad may be behind him but they are 'near the level' because they are up there near the top.

In this Country, on our wickets, there's no better bowler out there at the moment. Yes, the wickets help him, same as the wickets in India help Ashwin, and the quick tracks in SA help Steyn.

Nonsense. England play double the amount of Test matches per year therefore Anderson boosts his wicket tally. He's not on or ever has been anyway near Steyn.

Great bowlers do it in all conditions. Anderson can only do it on doctored green tops. Ashwin only on Indian sandpits.

Dunno if anyone heard 'Swanny' on TMS talking about raiding a bat cupboard in his Notts days?

The conversation was on tailenders not getting bat sponsors.  Swanny said they're better off with a bat from 'local Geoff' and he recalled Mike Hussey returning to Notts after a trip to his sponsor (you'll figure it out)...

(passable Aussie acccent); "mate, you've got to ask to see the bats in the private room, some absolute stunners in there." 
Swanny (who at the time was using the same brand); "will do, so I trotted off there the next day, asked to see the secret stash.  Shop floor employee, deadpan; "nothing like that here..."

Goes back to Notts the next day... "Huss, you're winding me up, there's no secret room!"  Hussey, adamant there is, calls the gaffer and goes down with Swann the next day.  They get let into the room.

Swann then reveals that they rolled down the grips on the bats - practically all have 'Ponting' written on the handles.  Swann takes a look at them and swaps them for the ones he picked up the day before, from the main stash.  he concluded by saying this was just before the 2005 Ashes and he likes to think that he contributed to that series win...

Was listening in thinking this anecdote is CBF heaven!

the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' argument doesn't hold with me, if that was the case you'd never improve as a team.

Ali suffers from being a jack of all trades and really the England set up should take a lot of the blame for this. He came into the team as a top order batsmen who could bowl a bit and they've clearly told him to invest a lot of time and training into his bowling, which will have been to the detriment of his batting. His bowling doesn't seem to be going anywhere and until is 155* his batting had been floundering. As an orthodox offie you first and foremost need to have a lot of control which he just doesnt seem to be able to get, whether or not he puts a lot of revs on it or has a nice action is really irrelevant if you can't control an end. They've squandered a lot of his talent and it's a crying shame because like we saw when he's batting well he's a joy to watch.

I'm not too sure on what other spinners are out there aside from the obvious choices of Rashid/Ansari and I'd like to see all three of them go to the subcontinent this winter.

I agree fix it bit but for me either Rashid or Ansari are good enough but hey thats my two pence worth.. or Borthwick

Ali takes wickets simple as that and is no better or worst than the other 3...

I'm not one for stats and figures but just looked at Anderson against pak in use last tour he got 13 wickets and yasir shah got 15 over 3 tests...and they were the flattest tracks I've seen for a while.

But I'm not going to bang my head against a brick wall. The guy is world class.

If you wanted you could argue Cook playing more tests in England is a better batsman than any lf the sub continent players who also have 10,000 test runs.

But I'm not going to I've just mentioned that to prove how pointless it is.

Perhaps this was why Ponting (allegedly) started using TK performance laminates with carbon inserts in the handle?

Since when did us English believe Rooney's world class? Pretty sure our country are the best at slating our players and knocking them down when they underachieve. As for Anderson getting Tendulkar 9 times, so what? Tendulkar was 33-40 when Anderson dipped his bread, essentially bullied an old man. McGrath had a peak Tendulkar in his pocket.
