Refurb of spokeshave and mallet making
« on: January 11, 2010, 06:30:26 PM »

I recently purchased an antique spokeshave from ebay, I originally hoped it would work despite the worn front and just needed some TLC. Once it arrived it was apparent it needed a serious refurbishment or binning.

It wasn't as hard as I anticipated once I'd planned out the problems I could encounter but it was a challenging and enjoyable project.

It however cuts beautifully now and I'm quite proud of it as it's was all done by hand, no machines.

Same blade as the original, had some pitting and rust but just needed cleaning up. I needed fewer tools than I'd originally anticipated which was a pleasant surprise.

Thought I'd add these two to this as well. I've started making wooden planes and here are two I've done so far. First one is a small 45º smoothing plane in Eucalyptus wood and the second is a 50º plane in Black Walnut.

Ebay is easily the best place, g and m tools do some nice blades as well for old tools or wooden planes.

David Finck's book is a great purchase if you fancy having a go. The best price for it was directly from his website and he also sells plane blades as well.
