Like England in some ways, there are unanswered questions. If you ask who Australia can write in in ink, definite world class options, you have:

WARNER
X
X
SMITH
X
X
X
X
STARC
X
X

So not many.  If you start adding in the guys who deserve a decent run in the side, or who are clearly the least worst option, I reckon you're up to:

WARNER
X
Khawaja
SMITH
X
X
X
X
STARC
Hazlewood
Lyon

So short an opener, and four slots in the middle.  I might be being just a little harsh on Nevill, who is solid, and there is at least quality cover in Wade, Payne and surely Whiteman at some point.  Mitchell Marsh balances the side, so is worth keeping.  So three....

...still not ideal...

Well, Steyn's out for six months. Will be mightily impressed if he somehow tours here in England next summer.

I suspect the Aussies are glad he's not playing in their series. And as much as I wish him a full recovery. a big part of me hopes that he is too rusty to be playing on the England tour!

I'd go with this

Warner
Burns
Khawaja
Smith
Wade (w/k)
Maxwell (all rounder)
Faulkner (all rounder)
Starc
Pattinson/Cummins
Hazlewood
Lyon

I've always thought Wade was a fine player, he's got a pair of Test hundreds and for Victoria he bats 5/6. Give him the responsibility at 5. Maxwell is too talented to leave out. His first class record is good average over 40. Faulkner is IMO a far better player than Mitchell Marsh. Pattinson and Cummins are high class just Gotta fix their brittle bodies.

May seem weird after suggesting I have 'love' for a Saffer, but I seem to take a disliking to their bowlers... I've never been a fan of Philander and I've recently said that I find Steyn overrated... Granted DS has had a spell where he was unplayable but I don't think he has been anywhere near as good as people make out!

I hope thats the team they turn up with in the next ashes series! 3 wickets and we're into the tail!

One of the best pace attack looking ordinary at home on a good pitch. This is what happens when batsmen fail to score. This could be a regular pattern for Aussies if the inexperienced batters dont step up. Smith and Warner are not going to score in every inning.

De Kock could well be the next AB. Makes it look incredibly easy. I bet he doesn't want this tour to end
