Is this terminal?
« on: February 10, 2017, 07:06:14 PM »

Just started refurbing my Aldred. Removed the sticker on the back and found this....

I can't decide how worried I should be about it. It seems like a very shallow crack (hard to see on the photo), but surely a very nasty place for this to happen to my inexpert eye. Any thoughts?

On the plus side, the anti scuff left behind loads of glue but white spirit took it off excellently.

Nothing to worry about.  It's just when the band saw has cut the splice.

I think you have to enjoy it while lasts. Which may be one hit or may be 300+ more runs.

Ryan there is a crack going across to the edge of the bat I think

Actually just seen the tiny crack, not a lot you can do about that. Carry on using it as normal, just keep an eye on  it

A 300 run bat would last me a few years buzz ;)

Hmmmm... I really don't like seeing this on any bat... Pretty much any crack can be repaired, even some shoulder splits have been done successfully by Tom and cam who are both excellent with repairs

But when it's here I just think the bat is a goner.

I hope someone else posts the complete opposite to my views but I had two go last year right in the same place.they both split in half. The were however storm damaged so there's no guarantee at all with those type of bats which you accept when buying them(presuming you know at the time that is-first I didn't , second one I did)

But I hope someone has something positive to say....I don't think so thou

Good luck

Unfortunately Carlo is right I think. This type of crack is terminal really, and it's hard to repair or prevent it going any further. Normally a result of the handle being put in too tight the crack will expand over time as the flex of the handle puts strain on that area. Also looking at the photo it seems to stretch across the back a little bit as well.

My advice, put any glue you can in there without opening it up as you don't want to make it any worse. Refurb as you would and then bind/tape or both and have a good prayer. As buzz said could be 3 balls or 300 runs

Well TBH you're all confirming my worst suspicions :( very sad, my favourite ever bat...

No, but given I've had it since 2014 I can hardly complain.  One of those things I guess... I'll sticker her up anyway and keep my fingers crossed.

Doesn't look great that! Not very neat with the splice cutting, doesn't seem typical for Aldred. Can't help but feel that's probably led to the crack...

Stick some glue in there - tape it up and see how it goes! Could last you years!

Not sure there's really much can be done, just keep using it as normal until one day the bloke at cover ends up catching half your bat!

Nice to see this kind of attitude. Social media these days is far too full of people using the internet to try and get free stuff.

Saw someone try and get a new coat of blacks the other day on Facebook because his stitching came loose after five years!! Five god dam years.

No, I've no beef with Paul at all, I know some people here were very critical of him but from my experience that was unwarranted. I just hope I can find something as good as a replacement when she dies, it'll cost me more than £130 this time though.
