Why do all cricket helmets have peaks?
« on: February 20, 2017, 01:44:46 PM »

Serious question. Many other sports helmets do without. Is it a throwback to peaked caps, or a protection thing, or because cricket has more sun than hockey, or skiing or American football etc? has anyone ever offered a cricket lid without a peak?

It's part of the protection system. @Ayrtek Cricket can explain!

Yeah, nice one! But those are all from the '70s / '80s. There are some cool looking lids around now, that just need a decent grille added. Maybe it's time for a reboot!

Surely without a peak the grill would need to be right up in your face.

By not having a peak you would have no means of stopping the ball from contacting with an area deemed to be a "no contact zone" in line with new testing regs.

If any thing comes into contact with the sheet, be it a ball strike, part of the helmet that may have broken off or the grille being pushed back onto it the helmet is classified as a failure.

Interesting science, thanks. Do they have different regs for Hockey, the goalkeeper helmets seem to be flatter in the front?

Hockey Keeper helmets are pretty robust as the keeper isnt expected to have to run 22 yards as fast as they can on a regular basis. The cricket helmet cantilevers the grille by anchoring it on each side of the helmet which means when struck it will move to a certain degree unlike hockey where the grille is fixed across the entire face without trying to leave a uninterrupted gap for vision.

All different regs were looked at when designing the latest version ranging from baseball to la crosse and other projectile based ball sports.

It is almost like @Ayrtek Cricket has to know this stuff for his day job... is this true or just a nasty rumour!

The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

Just out of interest.

Say there was a peakless helmet on the market and you bought it as that suited you and your game etc.

It's a sunny day, the pitch is orientated so the sun is behind the bowlers arm. He's quick and the pitch is lovely.

Do you

A) ask for a cap and trust your skill to keep anything rising off you

Or

B) risk the sun, and try your hardest to look down hoping to pick the ball up below the sun after it's left his hand?
