So week b4 last was my first winter net, it was painful to watch i am sure of that, I was so un fit and couldn't do much at all!

So my thoughts, I joined SlimmingWorld last Sat and thought I would do some training to not only aid my weight loss but also my fitness for playing this year.  Next net last Sunday 10.30am, I thought it would be a good idea to join the circuits class that starts at 9.00 am, a nice warm up and fitness session for an hour b4 nets in the same gym, all going well, no bad idea 15 mins into the circuits I pull up with a pain in my right calf, seems I've torn a muscle.... now I'm hobbling around unable to walk properly let alone run!

Moral to this story, remember your age and don't be so bloody stupid, just go to nets..

Sorry to hear about your dilemma as  you say rather than push it with age you need to manage what your body is capable of.

Yep , manage /know what you can do and what will risk injury .....
I do h.i.i.t every day (avoiding lunges though as it kills my knees) . I do about 200 crunches and ab exercise reps daily ( to help take load off my bad back) . I have a home gym and do 3 workouts a week , but only do heavy weights for some exercises,  others i do calisthenics /body weight exercises instead  . Lastly , i don't jog and don't do sprints ....i still know I'm fast enough but don't see any point risking further knee damage if i don't have to etc . To that end , next preseason , i won't be doing a lot of the same activities that the rest of the club will do , I'll be doing a lot of my own stuff and extra catching practice etc when the lads are jogging / sprinting / jumping around like mad young whippersnappers !  :)

Oh my God!!!  How old is everyone in this thread?

I'm 45 (but 16 at heart and in the loins)

Listening to @Biggie Smalls  you'd think he's 35 with the joints of a recently discovered dinosaur.

We all know that @Seniorplayer is the only member on here to have batted with Ranji

But how old are the rest of you crocks?

mid 30's and my back is (No Swearing Please)

didnt do anything specific to it but at the end of last season i was in trouble with it, didnt get any better and went to the doc before christmas, mri scan - bulging squashed disc in my lower back, painkillers and some talk about physio but not a lot they can do

constant low level pain and lack of flexibility was just coming to an end and had the odd day last week when i forgot about it, had a net last night and after batting it was painfull and then seized up for the first time, couldnt bowl and just about get up the stairs at home.. if that was a game i couldnt have fielded.  now seriously worried this is going to limit what part i can play in this game i love.

last few months i've been swimming, running 5k couple of times a week and lost a stone with another half stone left to go in the hope this helps, which i think it has

i'm going to have to bite the bullett and get down to a yoga class at the gym and just booked an appointment with gp to get some physio

its weird as it was my 3rd net and didnt struggle as badly after previous 2, did miss a week last week though

bowling shoulder is also (No Swearing Please) and left me in agongy after first 2 session, ffs what am i going to be like in my 50's

#backblog

who else gets back problems with batting? anything i could think about in my stance to correct it - standing tall maybe?

I have arthritis in neck and back , scoliosis,  and bulging discs in lower back.....I'm not familiar with batting without back pain .
I opened my stance ( for my neck ) .
For my back i widened my stance a bit , and instead of stooping over the bat /tapping ground, i air tap and stand tall . My trigger is to bend knees and stick my butt out a bit to get a lower position before delivery release point . It still allows my back to stay pretty straight and helps a lot with pain minimization,  especially over a long innings .

good advice with the air tap and knee bend, wil give it a go

thinking about my net last night and i was really hunced over in my stance as facing some decent pace with lots of full balls and yorkers

i'm going to have to change the way i stand or really struggle

A good litmus test is a long net , or even better , a long bowling machine session . The quick time between deliveries really increases the pain levels in your back. You'll know when the changes you make in your stance are working....you'll be able to get through a long net/machine session and still feel half way reasonable /upright afterwards .

.....but , the best thing you can do for your back is do abdominal exercises until you can wash clothes on your abs !

Get a decent chiropractor

I'm lucky in that my missus can give me deep tissue massage etc
And that helps a lot

Brucie, you are younger than me, care to guess by how much  ;)

Im tall and always had tight hamstrings so tend to get a bit of back pain after every bowling session, i have to do lots of stretching and ibuprofen gel to ensure it doesn't seize up. I had an 18 year break from cricket starting in my 20s which probably saved my body from a lot of wear and tear, so hope to still be bowling for many more years.
