Champions Trophy 2017
« on: March 10, 2017, 01:04:43 PM »

Ok so now were quickly heading toward the champions trophy what are peoples opinions before the event?

who will win? who will pack the biggest surprise? who will be the standout performer?

my 3 i reckon:

New zealand (did think england but gut instinct says NZ)
bangladesh to spring a surprise or two
jason roy to have a good tournament

been also thinking of the england 15 and think it will be tough to pick,

possibly something like this:

roy hales root buttler morgan stokes moeen woakes plunkett rashid finn ball bairstow billings curran, T.

not sure on the 15th member id ideally like a spinner but dpubt itll happen or if there is anyone, i saw james taylor suggested graeme white but id like to see mason crane be given a shot after he did ok for NSW recently and seems to have something about him to be selected for them!

Hales
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Woakes
Rashid
Willey
Plunkett

Billings
Bairstow
Finn

Assuming fitness, I'd be amazed if it's not:
Roy
Hales
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Woakes
Rashid
Willey
Plunkett

Billings
Ball
Dawson
Mystery final player, Bairstow and Wood being the obvious candidates. Could see a bolter getting in, there's usually some room for one - watch the Ireland games carefully. Hopefully not Finn.

I think the 15 will be -

Roy
Hales
Root
Morgan
Butler
Stokes
Ali
Woakes
Willey
Rashid
Plunkett

Bairstow
Billings
Wood
Finn

This is obviously dependent on Wood's fitness but i think he has to at least be in the 15 (if not the 11) if he gets games under his belt.

I don't see the need for another spinner when you have Ali and Rashid. The only person i think it is a bit harsh on is Ball.

As for the other questions -

My pick is SA to win it.
I am not expecting many surprises to be honest except i reckon that someone will score 200.
As for who will do well - without wanting to provoke an argument  ;) - i said it on a previous thread i think you would get good odds on Woakes being tournament top wicket taker.

Don't worry - I'm sure you will spread the word about the dangerous cult of Woakes to the people of the Canaries.

Can't believe the aussies have picked Pattinson - he's been shocking recently and withdrew himself for selection in the test series. Got to feel a bit sorry for the likes of Tye and Coulter-Nile.

Also Henriques selected ahead of Khawaja and Faulkner. Least they've dropped M Marsh

Not sure he's been 'shocking', 24 wickets at 17.41 for Victoria and 13 wickets in two matches at 12.92 for Notts so far BUT he hasn't played a List A game in 2 years and his ODI record is poor which is more where my surprise comes from with his inclusion although with him being in England and more familiar with conditions it will help his cause.
Withdrew himself because previously he's got back to fitness, barely bowled, gone into a Test Match and broken down. He's done it to make sure his body is up to the task (http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/story/1086647.html)
