Gayle plays quite traditionally I think, likes to hit down the ground quite still at the crease has the requisites of most top players.

Smith behind all his movements is still for the best part and in truth because his hands and head are synched more than most can do what he does.

Both would have made it I think in English cricket.

We have a few dashers who play just not as good as other people dashers but we are getting there.

I think the ECB have changed the coaching syllabus I have seen shows more about the individuals game than the stiff upper lip(shoulder).

I have done quite a bit at regional level this winter and with a few juniors the philosophy is clear, work on natural talent and move from there it a very simple clear directive.

10-15 years ago England did not have players like that your correct but it not because it was coached out of them.

Go on any coaching course now and natural flare is openly talked about and encouraged but so are batting basics which both Gayle and Smith still use.

Cricket has changed all over the world as you know and I find coaching is in a good place at the minute at the levels I have seen and I find the new badged up level 2 and 3 are far more player power orientated.

When I was in Australia a decade ago there coaches where not much different to the Uk ones but the young players had role models like Hayden and Gilchrist.

We simply did not have the players until KP came along that was 10-15 years ago he got picked and he has never been from a coaching manual either in most respects.

The shorter formats are simply more popular with youngsters now and they try to copy it more.

England have picked in the past unorthodox players.

Fair enough can't really comment on other parts of world at lower stages but they just seemed to produce more unique players than we do

Maybe the old ways have gone and the new breed will push the new way through

I do believe there was talent out there but it was not getting through our system but maybe they are looking differently now

He could easily travel the world for another 3/4 years picking up cheques and smashing the occasional weak medium pacers. Not a bad gig if you ask me
