Binding twine
« on: April 17, 2017, 08:57:05 PM »

I've been struggling to get a decent amount of the right thickness cotton twine for binding the handle. There's a lot on eBay that looks the right thickness but without seeing it it's hard to tell and even then it only comes in shortish lengths. I've bought 600m of twine online but it's too thick.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a supplier that will sell a spool of cotton twine to a budding batmaker?

Thanks.

A scottish company (can't think which one offhand so not that useful to you !) sell the twine used by almost all major brands.

Just googled it - http://www.twinesonline.com

A quick look through the different twines they offer on the website and it seems to me this is probably the one you're after

I remember phoning them when I ordered a few rolls and they pointed me in the right direction to what I needed - they sell to a fair few bat companies

Thanks for all your help guys much appreciated. I did try measuring the thickness of binding on some bats I've got in for refurbs with some callipers but as I haven't got a digital set it's quite hard to make out with a degree of accuracy. I presume 0.75-1mm would suffice like you say @tom line ?

The best cotton binding is traditional cotton its Stronger and easier to work with its also what batmakers use.
Would avoid that stretchy polyester  stuff.

Hi mate, this is the stuff I use, off ebay. If you search for the reference number below you can find it. It seems to work pretty well.

Isn't the twine just there to add a bit of reinforcing strength? I'm pretty sure the PVA glue will hold everything in place fine even if the twine had a small amount of stretch which the polyester/cotton mix stuff I've got doesn't have.

Do you not find it too thick mate? Pretty sure this is the stuff I've bought and it's like heavy duty parcel wrapping string.

Funny enough, I've had 2 different thicknesses from them. One is a little thinner. I order in batches of 200m, one time it came on a single roll and was thicker. The other time it came on 2 rolls (100m each) and was thinner. To be honest, they have both worked for me, but if you use the thicker twine it is worth shaving a little more off the handle.

If  It's pure cotton It's stronger doesn't stretch  so doesnt Get loose quickly also easier to work with than man made materials  also better for less handle vibration.

Just use zinc tape and you will be fine!

This is what I use:
https://www.twinesonline.com/henry-winning-royale-black-butchers-string--twine-1320-p.asp

Slightly unusual in that it's black (I just like that, old fashioned) and a bit thicker than standard, which I also like, but works very well. They do a bunch of other options if that doesn't do it for you.

I have a roll of binding twine that I got from Matt at H4L. Still have most of the roll which is surplus to requirements (that is if I can find it!)
