Second net with this bat after plenty of knocking in (shop and me), two example of bad damage.

Decided not return it, repaired it as follows - would be interested to hear forum's expert response.

Removed clear scuff sheet, bit of mallet to reshape/flatten.

Applied small superglue to both cracks, removed excess (still v small ridge of glue on face crack).

Applied coat of oil.

When dry, applied Hammer Edge and some extra tape, pictured.

Anything else professional refurb/manufacturer would have done?

Replacement bat maybe. PVC wood glue.

Can't see the photos. I would imagine that the retailer/maker will have a pretty dim view of you attempting a repair first. This may have voided any warranty.
The uneven face probably points to inadequate knocking in. That's why it's best to knock in first then apply a scuff sheet.

Reupped them. You're probably right re knocking in. Which is odd given it was knocked in by both me and shop.

Re warranty - can always remove hammer edge and send back with clean face for them to have a look i think. Can sand off glue.

What did you do to that poor bat?

Not sure any of the tape you put on is really doing anything, especially by the toe. Not sure what people would do on the face dent besides smear in some PVA maybe if the wood is split???

I wouldn't worry too much. there is (im pretty sure) a link between big bats, big edged and profile bats, being less durable now than before because of the pressing or drying process(or both)

so...it's kind of a hazard of modern bats, if it goes well just look after it as much as possible

bats years ago lasted a lot longer..but the performance was not there as much from the start

You wouldn't get a replacement if that was sent back to kookaburra in my opinion.

Toe damage like that can only be sustained through badly mistiming a hard drive at a Yorker. Cricket bats are designed to hit the ball out of the middle, they inherently have weaker areas and are not invincible. The weakest areas (edges and toe) are not strictly covered under a warranty as to put it bluntly the manufacturer will say you are supposed to use the middle. That being said I've never come across a manufacturer who has refused a free 'warranty' repair in this situation, and they will replace if the damage in not repairable.

As for the face dent there is an argument to say the bat has been under prepared (and the manufacturer will leave you and the retailer to sort that between yourselves) but also given the nature of the marking on the scuff sheet, there's an argument to say the bat has been hitting poor quality cricket balls extremely hard. All new bats should be played in Progressively with throw downs/gentle nets against old/soft balls. even the most robust/played in bats are not immune from a hard cheap ball that is basically a rock painted red.

This sounds spot on from start to finish, and thank you for your time and expert view. This was used in a fast indoor net against a very rapid bowler (for club level). Guessing 80mph. Didn't even think about ball quality. Starting to understand concept of a 'net bat' now.

Yup, dent suggest not enough knocking in or cheap balls.

Toe damage might lead to worse but not in the short term.

Both can be made to look nicer with some sanding, gluing etc, but IMO that doesn't really have a great deal of practical effect.
