All you have to remember is that it only takes 1 whack on the hand/fingers and that's your season or longer over...... and that doesn't matter whether you bat 1 or 11.... granted it is more likely to happen if you face quicker bowling but it can still happen if you play lower levels on worse pitches.
That is easily enough reason to buy gloves that give you very good protection.... that doesn't mean you can't search for a bargain though.
The other reasons are that with better grip, feel, sizing, comfort - it is certainly better/nicer/helps your batting.
Personally, i open the batting so face the quicks, so i wear mid/top of the range gloves for this reason, i have 3 pairs on rotation to help them last longer.
