6-42 for Philander in the second innings, 75 run win for SA. How many games is this series?

Who needs 4 day tests when this one technically only lasted 3 days? 18 wickets in one day.

Entertaining test match though.

After all the talk of England's bowling attack lacking pace, would be interesting to see how Philander would get on in Aussie conditions.

I'd say the pitch is solely responsible for this, yeh the seam attacks are rather handy too but on that wicket they were a real handful. Carry on producing decks like that around the world where possible and no test will go 5 days, unless the weather intervenes

He took loads of wickets last time they toured there.

South Africa have prepared the perfect pitch for India, dry and a bit of turn. Their struggles against spin continue and 2 run outs won’t help. Still expect SA to win this given India will be batting last on a dry wicket

Just watched the highlights.

Looks like India have done very well to be where they are because they bowled awfully. AB chopped on a wide long hop. Pandya with a great bit of work to run out Amla and they got lucky with Philanders ridiculous run out! Could have been a very different day.

On another note a have to add I wonder how Kohli can be such an amazing cricketer and then act like such a knob on the pitch when he is captain.

Thoughts on Markram?

I really like the look of him, looks organised and hits it very hard. Disappointed for him to miss out again in the 90s, I was a bit surprised by the review system for his wicket. To me it looked like he hit his pad too, and probably what convinced him to review because it looked as if he hit it too, but they never checked for hot spot to confirm, just went off the mark on snicko. Now to me it looks as though he may have hit his pad at the same time as the spike appeared and ball passed the bat, so surely they needed to check for a mark on hot-spot to confirm the spike was from ball on bat. Anyway rant over

I'd say even Stevens after day 1 and agree India a tad lucky to be in the position, bowled poorly when I was watching and some strange fielding positions

Don’t think the host broadcaster has hot spot - it was given out on the field and there was no conclusive evidence to over turn it, so right decision was made

SA will probably hope to get to 380.

Disagree, personally. I watched the entire day's play and I thought India bowled well other than Shami and Bumrah. Shami wasn't at the races at all. Bumrah's first spell was 5-x-7-0, but then released a lot of pressure before lunch with 5-0-35-0 with his next 5. Ishant and Pandya did what you have to do on that pitch, stayed patient, bowled cutters and bowled one side of the wicket.

Ashwin offered a LOT more control than I thought he would, even on a pitch that offered him purchase. He went around the wicket too much for my liking though and didn't bowl enough at Faf by giving Amla a too many 4 balls instead of singles.

Don't get me wrong, South Africa threw away wickets at the end with those 2 run outs, but India didn't let them get away even with Shami and Bumrah having poor days. I'm the first to criticise Kohli's captaincy (don't get me started on the wasted review in the first session), but he made a bold move delaying the new ball and then delaying it further even after he got the big breakthrough. Kept Ashwin to bowl at QdK with an 84 over ball and he got him first ball.

As 'csnew' said, gotta still back SA to win this but if India bowl them out for <350 and still have 5+ wickets in hand by the end of the day, this could be another fantastic test on a not-so-fantastic pitch. Will be interesting to see how they play Maharaj on this pitch. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Maybe I am being slightly biased as an Indian, but I thought we did bowl well. But then again my expectation bar is very, very low following previous tours, so there's that! :D You're spot on about the field placements - far too reactionary at times and don't think he and Ashwin have quite worked out what each other wants yet. It's been a while, albeit not much away from home, but 34 tests in I expect more.

Agree on Markram - little / no trigger, very still at the crease, something I need to learn myself. ICC needs to sort themselves out and make DRS uniform everywhere but let's be honest that's not gonna happen when SL go to Zim etc.

I did wonder if it was because hot spot wasn't available or in use, but I just presumed if the DRS is being used then it has the whole package, always

India have dropped 3 catches this morning. Will probably end up costing them this match and give SA 400

Pujara running himself out for a golden duck was just beyond belief. this is the day India need to show how good their batsman are.

It was.....unexplainable.there was never a single there  :o
