I’m sure the batas ones will do a similar job.

Im speculating but the materials used may be slightly different ie palms, inserts, fill etc

The forum sponsors who source their own softs will be able to shed more light on this

Batas don't have to pay for the workforce, the infrastructure the sponsorship, the advertising etc that GM have to pay for.

I have a pair of batas gloves. Very Good gloves. Use them for nets. For £40 you can't go wrong. The B&S ones at £45 also very good.

I should also add that GM are able to utilise better economies of scale and can research materials better. They also have more experience in the market.

The smaller companies can use the experience of the guus making the kit and their economies if scale which is why there is little divergence on designs (although there isn't that much you can do, hands are all pretty similar!)

Lets just say that there are no cricket equipment manufacturers who have made their millions from kit... (that I know of!)

Also the GM gloves have poron in them, I am not sure the Batas ones do...

I don`t profess to have the knowledge of the mechanics and viability of glove manufacture but if the likes of Batas can afford to price softs as they do without passing on a huge mark up on what is basically the same glove, then us Punters should vote with our £££`s ..G+M`s financial structure should be of no consequence unless a hugely superior product is being marketed to the customer but £50 superior ??

However, you pays your money etc etc

While this is true and a more clued up person would buy Batas this is the same way in all walks of life (Clothing, food, cars....)

You are paying for the logo on the equipment not the equipment itself, same way people will buy a NB over a Slazenger Bat...

Unless there is genuinely something new ( @Ayrtek Cricket new box for example with the new protection materials) or they can prove they are better at something than their competitors sorts are all much of a muchness....

Apart from about £50 ??

Made by different manufacturers, and sold by totally different ends of the industry. As mentioned GM have to pay for infrastructure, overheads, staff, brand awareness, player exposure etc. Then there is the other part of it that many small brands/hobby brands like Batas don't have to worry about, tax.

As eluded to by Buzz, Poron adds to the cost.

Don't be soft, it's a foam  :D

......?

Very few small brands are VAT registered. And to be honest there are plenty of small ‘brands’ out there operating literally as hobbies/cash in hand to pay for a holiday etc (the owner of a medium rare brand currently trying to sell up said this in my presence about a year ago)
Funds from purchases go straight into personal bank or Paypal accounts. Accounts, tax returns etc are never in the equation.  I have no idea if batas is one of these.

I’m not disputing that big brands like GM can be seen as overpriced and not disputing that small brands can offer good quality and value. But asking for the reasons why and/or kicking off about it is the same as asking why buying from a startup is cheaper than from a multinational. That’s how it is in any industry, it always intrigues me that people seem to consider cricket differently.

That's a pretty big leap and big brush to tar all small businesses of any type with! It isn't a requirement to be VAT registered under the turnover threshold so why knock any company for that?

Anyway, fact is the gloves are cheap and good and do the same job. They also happen to be significantly cheaper than the same gloves from other similar sized companies which is a more interesting talking point  :)

I wasn’t meaning to knock anyone, just stating the reasons behind the differences, and the reality is way more brands than most people would believe operate this way.

Yes different prices for the exact same thing ometimes happens. When Neon first launched for example, softs were pretty much cost price and this was because Adam was running the brand literally as a hobby and if I recall correctly, to add some weight to a university project / gain some extra curricular credit. It worked, I can remember reading that the person interviewing him for a very good job that he managed to get played cricket and was aware of Neon and that no doubt differentiated him from other candidates.

There isn’t much to be made in softs to be honest, especially if you’re operating with legitimate business overheads. Many small and medium cricket brands (particularly one man batmaker-salesman operations) consider softs more hassle than they are worth, but you can’t not stock them if you want to be taken seriously.

The Batas gear looks very very well priced, not much money they're making there.

Good memory! Back in 2013 I was still at uni and it was mainly as a side experiment as part of my dissertation, like Jake says it pretty much landed me my first job and has helped me no end on that side of things since.

It's only now that I've got a shed load of spare time compared to when I was living in London that I've ramped things back up again, I'm one of those sad people that struggles to switch off and this fills the spare hours of the day with something I enjoy quite frankly! (I've got to be up at 5.15 and I'm still sat here now doing sample designs for 2019, says it all...).
