Only managed to get 10 players together for an earlier start away yesterday, ended up playing on their 1st pitch as their opponents cancelled Friday evening. Won the toss, batted first we had a father/son pairing that I hadn't played with before opening the batting in what I think was their first Saturday game (For us, certainly). The father scored a great century and his son (12 year old county player I think) batted alongside him for 20 overs or so although he didn't really score any runs. His father was scoring at a decent clip so the run rate was going along at around 4 an over in those first 20 overs.

Main problem was we didn't kick on in the last 10-12 overs of the innings despite having plenty of wickets in hand on a good batting track, I fell LBW to a spinner trying to force it through the legside and the guys after couldn't increase the scoring against some disciplined bowling.

We managed to score 210, which was 30-40 short of what we should have got but after being 70 all out last week I'm not going complain too much ;)

In the end it was too difficult to defend with ten men on a good batting wicket with a quick outfield and giant boundaries but at least it's progress.

On a personal level I feel like I'm finally starting to get the hang of batting, after a lifetime of floundering about like a #11. Averaged 9 in my first season after coming back, averaged just under 11 last year but this year my scores have been 22, 21, 54, 0 and 30 yesterday. I've been out trying to up the run rate near the end in a couple of those innings so I'm tempted to move a bit higher up the order and see if I can't convert more of those 20's into 50's.

Stand still, watch the ball and don't be afraid to block or leave three balls in a row. Why didn't you guys tell me it was that simple!

(Watch as I've jinxed it and fail to crack double figures the rest of the season)

We (David and myself) managed to get ourselves a match this afternoon and were delighted to enjoy a 1 wicket win with just 1 ball to spare.  Oppo got 138 off 25 overs and I went in to bat at 115-8 with 4 overs to go. Lost another wicket very quickly but that worked in our favour as the last batsman is a tip and run player and I can also do quick singles (just can't turn quickly and do 2s !!). A couple of boundaries helped and it felt good to be batting as we got over the line.  In contrast to some recent matches, it makes a real difference to your own batting if you have confidence in the person down the other end. Earlier David bowled really well with his 4 overs going for just 17 runs and he chipped in with a few runs too.

Good weekend.

Lost yesterday as our top 3 decided to plod around and think 200 was enough on a road. I ended up with a cheeky 40* including two huge 6’s off 20odd balls trying to push the score up. The oppo opened with a pinch hitter and they were 0-45 off 3. Skipper threw me the ball as a leggie in the 4th over and I ended up bowling 6-2-18-0 which i was pretty happy with. Unfortunately a visual migrado came on and I had to leave the pitch for around 30mins as I could only see vague shapes. They ended up chasing it 5 down with 3 overs to spare.

Today we score 341-5 off our 40. Our 3 scores 183 and opener 101*. I got 23 off 15 balls before getting run out trying to get the not out batsman back on strike to guide him through to his ton. Bowled nice and tightly again taking 3-23 from 6 overs as the oppo ended up 167-8 from their 40. Their young opener carrying his bat for 55*.

All in all, 1 win, 1 loss. 63 runs and 12-4-41-3.

Finally got a T20 in last night. We got 165-6, which even given the flat pitch and fast outfield, we felt was 20 more than we needed. We were right. We got a couple of early wickets that left them behind the rate; they eventually "recovered" to 110-9, but it was really just a case of getting through the 20 overs and into the pub.

Not sure if my 2018 season might be done. I've done something to my back (slipped a disc at the end of 2012, and while not as bad as that, it's pain in an identical spot) when bowling on Saturday and I'm still struggling now.

So disappointing.

Managed to stuff my back up somehow on a week where pretty much every bowler in the club is unavailable. Genuinely got an XI out containing no specialist bowlers, away at the smallest ground in the league... KT tape and nurofen it is then!

A week off for me - my partner is struggling with our 1 and a half year old so as there is no second team game today I have done the decent thing...to be honest not been in the beat form the last two weeks so might be a good time to recharge the batteries and go again next week fresher

Incredibly embarrassing day for me. Was opening the batting today, and my heart sunk when i walked over to the wicket and found what was essentially an outfield with stumps in it. Surely must be the only wicket in the country that was soft and green this week. It's not rained here in about 6 weeks. Nothing could have prepared me for the first ball of the game, which was back of a length from the quickest bowler in the league. I decided to go forward to it considering the wicket. It brushed my ankle on it's second bounce and hit the bottom of middle stump. It completely died on a patch of grass...

The bowler apologised profusely, my opening partner (who usually tells everyone the ball was s*** and they should have hit it) walked over and said "f***** hell, there's nothing you can do about that mate, Botham doesn't keep that out" I essentially wasted my Saturday because the opposition can't be bothered to sort their own wicket out. There was no excuses for the break down i had next as i lobbed my bat, volleyed my helmet and gave the changing room door a right hook on the way in (heavy duty thankfully, only damage to my knuckles and not the door) terrible example to set our younger players, thankfully none of them saw a 21 year old bloke have a sulk over a game of cricket as they were on a boundary walk.

Went for a boundary walk where the bowler once again ran over to me and said "i'm so sorry that our groundsman can't be a****, i didn't deserve that wicket" i had slightly calmed down by then so had a quick chat with him about cricket before going out to umpire for a 25 over spell as my teammates racked up 220 thanks to some absolutely awful bowling (spinners all bowled 4/5 wides each, seamers bowled about 20 no balls between them)

My skipper then chucked me the new ball as we were the only seamers we had. Took 1-16 off 3 overs before calling it a day and letting the youngsters come on early. During my spell i literally hit the seam and had the ball going all over the place, all the wicket and not me unfortunately. Won by about 100-ish runs, took a decent catch over my shoulder. Our youngster took 4-for which was pleasing.

Hopefully i get more of a bat tomorrow

Only had 10 players including  2 12 year olds lost by 23 runs chasing 240 would the extra players saved 23 runs  when iwe were fielding possibly still a good effort as this was the oppositions third team there first 2 sides are Birmingham league  the ball was leaping and flying around following yesterday's rain groundsman said he had rolled the wicket he must have used a balloon

A nerve shredding  one wicket win over in Westside London today to stop the rot of 8 successive losses . I got the hardest 20 I've ever got against some quality spin on a minefield of a pitch. It was taking chunks out of the surface and they had an overseas left arm New Zealander  who was turning it miles.i don't really know how to describe the pitch over than it was like a massive cake and bits kept coming out of it.

The most pleasing thing thou was 2 colts 19 and 15 held their nerve to put on 40 for the last wicket. I can only imagine how chuffed they are tonight.

We are still bottom of the table but anyone who has seen terminator 1 where he gets crushed and there is a flicker of a red light in his eye....you know he ain't dead......

Lost again, as we failed to bat out our 45 overs again.

I keep on getting starts and throwing them away, made 31 today before trying to clear long-on. I should be satisfied, given that my batting average this season is higher than the last two seasons added together (not hard to do, tbf!) but I know I'm leaving runs on the table and I should be making these into big scores.

22, 21, 54, 0, 30, 31.

With the exception of that duck, I've walked off feeling like I should have got 50+ in every single one of those innings.
