Agree with DorsetDan re finding the right shape first and foremost.
Re padding foam vs back strap etc ive found good fit with both...an albion with pad foam was the trickiest for me but worked in the end , an ayrtek with foam that i have now fits me beautifully , a couple older masuris with the back strap fit great ( and were the quickest to dial in the fit , compared to the previous two mentioned ). But - my air liner ayrtek fits best and is idiot proof ....10 pumps and its perfect every time .
I know plenty of people struggle to go from one style or shape to the other and head shape probably is the defining factor but familiarity plays a part too.
I guess my head is easy to cater for , shape wise , provided its a large lid . Comfort is important , but comfort is more than just shape too. It's also the weight and how the grille feels and impacts your vision and whether or not it impedes stroke play etc .
Lastly , whether a helmet feels more front heavy or rear heavy can impact the helmet riding/tilting low or high .....my old albion seemed to be front heavy and , although fit my head fine , tilted forward too much and messed with my vision a bit -which led to me seeking other alternatives.
