Variable fit of helmets
« on: April 20, 2018, 06:23:21 PM »

Evening all,

Just a quick query, do you guys find that helmets by a particular manufacturer fit you better than others in general?

Also, many helmets have the adjustment ring at the base of the neck, or within the back of the helmet to tighten the fit snugly but many do not.  Do you find that helps in terms of fit - or if you play around for long enough with all the foam inserts etc do you end up with a solid fit from any helmet?

Just weighing up what to go for next in terms of mid level with good protection - but a few I've tried felt like they were slipping all over the place.  Maybe I've just got a peculiar shaped bonce?

Cheers

The PremAYR model should mould to the shape on ur head by pushing the air into the different cells surrounding it to provide a snug fit.

I’ve got a couple of them left at a forum special of £100 currently if anyone is interested.

Agree with DorsetDan re finding the right shape first and foremost.
Re padding foam vs back strap etc ive found good fit with both...an albion with pad foam was the trickiest for me but worked in the end , an ayrtek with foam that i have now fits me beautifully , a couple older masuris with the back strap fit great ( and were the quickest to dial in the fit , compared to the previous two mentioned ). But - my air liner ayrtek fits best and is idiot proof ....10 pumps and its perfect every time .
I know plenty of people struggle to go from one style or shape to the other and head shape probably is the defining factor but familiarity plays a part too.
I guess my head is easy to cater for , shape wise , provided its a large lid . Comfort is important , but comfort is more than just shape too. It's also the weight and how the grille feels and impacts your vision and whether or not it impedes stroke play etc .
Lastly , whether a helmet feels more front heavy or rear heavy can impact the helmet riding/tilting low or high .....my old albion seemed to be front heavy and , although fit my head fine , tilted forward too much and messed with my vision a bit -which led to me seeking other alternatives.

Funnily DorsetDan, I found the Masuri helmets to be a little square, and I guess you can kind of counter that with skilful placement of the foam inserts, but the last one I wore sort of felt like it was slipping a lot.  Tried a new GM helmet the other day and found the fit to be pretty good with the dial helping a lot.  Guess I need to find somewhere with a diverse range up here (Newcastle).

The Ayrtek system sounds great, have worn one in a net and found it incredibly comfortable, but do probably prefer something a little more traditional.  I've never spent that kind of cash on a helmet either.  Are you still looking at making a more traditional lid?

Some great advice Biggie, thanks. I guess the only way is to try loads. Oddly the last one that I wore that felt really comfortable was a Slaz Elite - was less happy about the grille mind.

I'd imagine there'll be plenty of takers. When and what sort of price range? Love your attention to detail, definitely inspires confidence in your product.

I don't think you can really get around the underlying shape with foam, only minor size adjustments

I ended up buying a load online and keeping the one I liked most as very few retailers carry a range of helmets.

Great read that. Similar experience to mine with regards to trying out a GM in a shop.

Think that's what I mean with regards to the foam as well, you can try and counter the difference in shape, but I think that effectively lifted it from my head, and so it felt like it was sliding about a lot. I guess I thought maybe I'm doing something wrong as they're so ubiquitous on the circuit.

To be honest, I've never been all that impressed with how any cricket helmet feels on the head, you just have to get used to it I guess.

I have wondered if the tech in my Giro ski helmet could be used in batting helmets somehow

@stevat I found the same with Masuri- seemed to be perched on top of my head

The GM started to look a bit tired and I took a few knocks so I've replaced with the new Shrey. It's not my first choice given the past experience but the fit is perfect. If the GM was quite good then maybe give Shrey a look or Ayrteks air liner
Will do thanks. Which Shrey model did you go for? The new GM models really do appeal, very impressed value wise.

Tried on a bunch in a local emporium of cricketing wares this afternoon once it was apparent I wasn't playing cricket today.  Oddly found a Masuri that fit nicely, then realised it was £200.  Then found another Masuri (OS Test) that was £80 ish and fit okay - felt comfortable in both M and L sizes, but probably preferred the snugger fit.  Then after a few wiggles to make sure it wasn't going to fall off, checked it out in a mirror, and it looked as though the grille stopped a half inch shy the bottom of my chin.  Was I wearing it correctly?  Have I got a massive head or long face maybe?

Also tried a GM Icon helmet, fit nicely and liked the retention dial.  Again the grille was a little short.  Also tried a Hunts that was uncomfortable, and a Kookaburra that just felt a bit odd.  The search continues.  GN helmets any good?

I tried the Shrey, Masuri OS and the Vision series and the OS was the only one I could get a comfortable fit with. I seemed to be inbetween sizes with the others.  Think it's just trial and error.

Tried the gn test opener in large, was quite narrow and pressed against the temple. The shrey helmets I found the most comfortable so went for the Shrey Armor which I felt was pretty good value-comfortable and light for a steel grille. Hope it does the job it's supposed to do!Set me back 42.99 from cricket direct.

Might give the GN a try if anywhere local stocks it.

Been speaking to Chris at Masuri, he reckons that official retailers can request a special with a larger grille at no additional cost to a standard unit.  They apparently also do a series of different foam inserts for each and every head shape you could imagine - so you can actually really change the fit.  Only thing is the retailers tend not to stock them for ease of ordering and reordering and thus they aren't widely available.  If I were in marketing at Masuri, I would be letting people know that such possibilities exist.  For the record, he reckons the Original Series gives a more oval fit in general, whilst the Vision series offers a more forgiving rounded shape.
