Can we use a non-wooden mallet for knocking in a bat?

Why do we need to use a wooden mallet? Would'nt the bat face get knocked in equally well with a plastic or rubber mallet? Thanks.

I can't imagine plastic would be heavy enough or hard enough, and I'm not a scientist, but I would think that a rubber mallet would absorb most of the impact when striking the bat instead of the actual bat. Anything you use to knock in a bat would have to be as hard or probably harder than the willow itself. I've heard of people trying out hammers though, in theory that should work but it would be very easy to damage the bat, so probably don't take a hammer to your bat. 

Personally I subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of thought and will keep using my bat mallet.

I would've thought a strong resin would do the job - but when wooden mallets are under a tenner there is literally zero point in exploring this lol

So , basically , if you were hell bent on not using a wooden mallet and could source a nylon one then you could use that .....but a claw hammer is really asking for trouble /craters .

Modified sledge hammer would be good, round the edges. Mount it onto a hammer drill

I reached out to the ‘podfather’ a few years ago asking about said mallet... He indicated he’d had it professionally engineered and cost him well over $100 years before hand. I did the numbers the and figured it was going to be about $200 to get one made... So I’ve still got my timber one.
