Some manufacturers in the sub-continent are using European Willow and still calling it English Willow.  This willow looks good with many narrow grains, it even plays well for a short time but it is very brittle and soon breaks.  A lot of fake bats will be made form this wood. It grows wild on the rivers of Europe and has to deal with extremes or heat and cold which makes it very slow growing. It is very hard to tell a European Willow from an English Willow bat, generally European willow will be very narrow grained and have a lot of red colour as per the photo, but not always. If the bat is branded and too cheap to be true it could be European Willow.  Photo of European Willow tree here and European Willow cleft.

http://www.cricketbatwillow.com/imperfections-in-willow/

I know what European willow is mate. And like i posted above, its not narrow grained, no heartwood, if these arent english willow bats then i will go ahead and challenge every single bat out there marketed as english willow

Sub £100 from Pakistan is more than achievable considering the volumes of clefts the large brands buy.

If GM can make a 404 in Nottingham for less than £100 then I have no doubt something similar is more than do-able in Pakistan.

The bit I’m struggling with is ‘top grade’

I’ve seen plenty of Pak made bats at this price point that are always promised as top grade and almost always look like this. Then there’s the handles to consider, usually poorly made and ill fitting, this is quite a generalisation but it’s usually the case in my experience

404? I bought this for GBP127 plus postage!

It really isnt that hard to fathom that a top grade english willow bat can be made available in Pakistan for gbp160 (remember there is a limited time 50% off sale from AS which i made use of).

What really baffles me are the companies who charge north of GBP400 for their bats even though most production is in india where labor conditions are pretty similar to Pakistan

For £127 that bat has been sold at a loss by the retailer, it’s not really a reflection of where bat pricing is at

Sometimes this is done to gain trust of customers. If a gbp80 bat works out then i would be happy to pay more next time

Is it really at a loss to the manufacturer though? Think about it. I have been in Lahore (one of the biggest and most commercial cities of pakistan) for the last 20 days. Visited dozens of cricket shops and found that 100% of them either stock CA, MB, Ihsan or unstickered bats. There are so many great bat companies in pakistan but nobody stocks them. Imagine: one of the best batsmen we have produced in recent times is sponsored by HS, yet not a single retailer is stocking the HS 41 bat. Even our captain in all 3 formats is an HS guy yet i didnt see a single HS core 5 bat in any retail stores. Everyone i asked, said "we only stock CA or Ihsan because other brands dont sell". AS have recently resurfaced into the market since they sponsored Faheem Ashraf and Asif Ali. I think its a brilliant move on their part if they can sell a few bats at very low price and build their reputation through word of mouth so more people are interested in them and more retailers are stocking them

Did you read the part about what i requested them? There were plenty of 10-15 grainers but almost all of them had heartwood and heavier than 2lb11oz in the champ profile. I told them i want zero heartwood and sub 2lb10oz weight even if it has only 6 grains and they did exactly that. And the sale price is closer to gbp80 not usd80.

They will sticker it up as a champ even if it technically isn't a champ going by their own definition.

I am hoping to go to Pakistan next year, but unless I see something special or go to Sialkot I won't be buying a bat. If I do go to Sialkot I will more than likely be going to visit AM who I have had dealings with and get something custom, more to do with the fact I am there than anything.

I do agree there are many good brands outside of Malik, Ihsaan and CA, but it's no different to here, you have the big brands and smaller ones. An example that comes to mind are Hunts County who make great bats but GM, GN and NB/Adidas are everywhere.

I knew that was a possibility especially due to the 50% discount. Hence i made it somewhat easier for them and demanded something realistic. If they're going to stick the champ stickers on something I'd rather it be something that i can live with rather than a monster 15 grainer that weighs 2lb14oz. A slight twist in the tale is that the courier messed up my address and since i fly back tonight, i have told them to hold the bat at their airport office where i will collect it before checking in to my flight. So stay tuned until tomorrow morning for updates

I too bought a AS champ bat in last year's sale and that was G2 willow (45% heartwood) in my opinion.

I just wanted to know what is a decent price range in which one can buy a proper G1 bat made in Pakistan.

And also if someone buys an AS champ during the non-sale time for $ 200 should they expect a G1 bat?

I think if you buy them on regular price then it may be better quality and g1 bat.

I recently bought a MB bubber sher and it looks like a G1.
