Good luck and enjoy shaping! Been a fair few years since I gave it a go (CE bats) one day I might have a good at it again.

Never had any drawknife accidents more blisters from using the travisher!

Plenty of videos nowadays, back then I had an hour down at fusion with James and away I went. My only regret was not keeping one of the bats then selling my branding to someone infamous on here....

Got a garage to clear first but have tools, vice and bench and a source for part mades to begin with so all ready to go.

Hoping to spend some time with a bat maker  to get some tips. Been emailing Paul Aldred as I bought a bat last year so might bend his ear for a bit!!

Quick update chaps - spent a little while getting some money together to buy gear. Last night a big box arrived from @Red Ink Cricket and in there was a part made and 2 damaged clefts which i will be using to mess around with and get used to tools before trying the part made.

Cant wait to get cracking with this now and big thanks to John for sorting me out - the part made looks very decent for the grade it was described at - will be documenting everything and hopefully showing off my bat shaping prowess on here (i reserve the right not to if it all goes horribly wrong!!)

Make sure all your tools are razor sharp, it’ll make shaping a whole lot easier.

Plenty of advice available on here and plenty of videos on youtube.

Been ten years plus since I’ve wielded a drawknife so would be starting where you are at now

Well I’ve made a start on one of the damaged clefts which were bought as practice to get used to using the tools etc.

Its a lot tougher than it looks on the videos but I haven’t lost a finger as yet so I’m taking that as a success!

Getting used to the drawknife and it can take a lot out with not a lot of effort!

yeah i think the tools i have need sharpening - i picked them up from a lad on here who hadnt used them for a while so i dont know how long since they were sharpened.

Any suggestions for sharpening items would be greatly apreciated.

YouTube for the drawknife sharpening, and please be incredibly careful, sharpening them is a quick way to lose a finger

Or if you have a local joinery shop they are usually willing to sharpen for a few quid

Otherwise it’s an oil stone and like Northern Monkey said be extremely careful

You've just jinxed me now.

Pray for my fingers  ;)

There is a hire me tool place just down the road - might have a wander in there and see if they know where i can get it done.

There’s no jinxing mate
A decent draw knife is a blooming lethal thing,
Because the blades not removable or easy to mount in a vice etc, there’s a very specific way to sharpen them
You need to watch the you tube vid where one handle is held against your chest .
You’ll know what I mean when you watch it,
And do it slowly , with a finger dangling down as a stop against the blunt end of the knife

I’ll get the missus to take a couple pics later , but try and watch a few vids,,,most are of Americans and are very very good

Yea i watched a vid last night and saw how it was held. I've also found a guy in newcastle who can sharpen plane blades so i think he will do a drawknife with no issues - might get them sharpened by him first and then look at stones on amazon or other places.

Anyone got any recommendations for sharpenting stones to buy?

use the travisher ..... forget the rest for now. You can make a decent bat using only a travisher.

Also plane the wood with the plane on and angle like this ............ / and go straight up and down, seemed to work better like that for me.

I think that travisher will need sharpening too but im unsure howto sharpen a curved blade.

The little drawknife has already claimed its first victim - nice nick in the knuckle in my left thumb - probably the first time i used it as well. :D

Got sharpening tools arriving tomorrow so all systems go again!

The travisher didnt half take a big lump out of the cleft i was practicing on though - going to have to work out how to sharpen that too.

Little side project i'm running as well making my own bat wax and hopefully selling it on - my little cricket empire is starting to take shape.

Had some cracking help from john at red ink - emailed crown sports in boldon twice now with no reply - guess he doesnt fancy helping a newbie out :-/
