Bairstow's press statements have been utterly embrassing recently.  He has turned into a caricature of Geoffrey Boycott reciting his own stats at any given opportunity.  The fact is that his batting has been no better than the likes of Vince, Stonemam or Malan over the last 2 years and he is very lucky that England have decided to change the balance of a winning side just to accomadate him.

Right decision to rest Anderson but he and Broad would have been much better sitting out this tour on preparation for next summer.  The seamers have been redundant out here. The only one who could have made a difference is Stone with his extra pace and it looks like he won't get a go

I know what you mean, I don't like players quoting their averages at club level let alone internationals

However press reports Bairstow and broad have been excellent while not playing, in reality most of us don't think stokes or Ali are number three's. I think stokes myself has to bat in that number 6 spot where he can be devastating.

It looks like 3 or nothing for Bairstow ....I think we should stick with Foakes foe windies and beyond

You must be watching a completely different player to the one I see against the 3 you've mentioned

Also felt it was pointless taking Anderson and Broad on this tour they should have  rested ready for the Aussies.
Also why take Stone and with England series winners  not play him.

Didn't you want Leach dropped for the 2nd Test?

Looks as though it'll be something like...

Burns
Jennings
Bairstow
Root
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes
Ali
Rashid
Broad
Leach

I guess Sam only bowled 4 overs in the second Test due to a niggle, so can see why they think we only need 2 pace bowlers.
Series already won so nice to see us giving others a crack. I would have been tempted to play Stone for his pace, but Broad has been patient so I can see why!
Buttler has already commented that the standard of Foakes glovework has been a real wake-up call! There have been a few conflicting reports, but I hope Bairstow shares that attitude as Foakes has looked every inch a World class keeper so far. Whoever bats at 8 will probably feel they are batting too far down the order. But with that line-up, we do bat very deep. Although Curran does offer some class in the lower order and will miss Jimmy's sweeping!!  :D

According to sky it’ll be foakes at 8 which would be daft!

I’d also bat broad at 11!

number 11 all day long in that line up

have to say, it looks good. I would swap bairstow and root but that's been done to death

More of a problem is who gets demoted to 8?

Ali, as he's had a poor series? Pretty big drop in 3 tests from no 3!

A poor series?

If you're just talking about with the bat then yes, but that's only because he's been shoehorned into a slot he isn't suited for.

On a bouncing track with 90mph bowlers, I would bat Broad no higher than 11 too. But I suspect that they may bat him at 10 over Leach.
I  know he hasn't been great lately but SB still averages aroud 20 with the bat in Tests with a ton and plenty of 50s. So I still reckon they'll give him 10, unless Leach has to bat as night watchman!

And Foakes at 8 is crazy. Keeper needs to bat at 7. Ali bowls and he is normally happy to bat wherever they put him - plus I bet he hits some runs down the order.

absolutely. I think myself he is a number 8..a very good one indeed

hopeless to compare any stats on Ali batting 3 it's just not fair at all

Bairstow averaged 34 in 2017 and 26 in 2018 across 37 innings in total.  That certainly isn't a record that would justify a batsman retaining a place in the side in my opinion and I think, worse than that, is the way that he has been getting out bowled or nicking off staying leg side of the ball in a manner Stuart Broad would be embarrassed by.  The uncertainty over other positions in the batting order seems to have allowed Bairstow's poor run over an extended 2-year period to sneak under the radar.

He had an exceptional 2016 - as he is more than happy to tell everyone - but this is the only year when his form with the bat was good enough to retain a place in a test team as a batsman.  He clearly has talent but one very good year out of seven so far as a test cricketer isn't going to make you an automatic pick in a good side.

Ali is a number 8 at test level that said  England probably  have done him a favour letting him bat at 3 in this series and open previously before he faced Starc and co  in 2019 with a new Duke ball

Stats suggest he's a number 7, Averages over 4o there I think, far more than at 8.
