Stats suggest he's a number 7, Averages over 4o there I think, far more than at 8.

Ok - stats again. If you are going with stats then Foakes averages over 75 in Tests  ;) So surely you can't bat Foakes below 7 if you're going with stats?
But even going first class batting, Ali is 37 and Foakes is 41. So who to bat where?
Surely just bat Foakes at 7? I know this leaves Ali at 8 and 7 would be better, but what can you do!?

Wasn’t arguing for that, just against the point that Ali is a test number 8 when he has a great record at 7 (and an even better one at 4 ;))

I don't disagree at all fella! It's actually a nice problem to have.....
Can't see Root being moved from 4 either. If he did then Root at 3, Ali at 4, then one hell of a middle order of Bairstow, Stokes, Foakes, Buttler, Curran, etc!
I just hope that Bairstow does well at 3 as that would help resolve that position for the moment! We need a settled top order.

Why does a keeper have to bat at 7?

If anyone is to be demoted to number 8, it's clearly Moeen as he averages 23 in overseas matches. In fact the only time he's remotely looked a batsman in overseas conditions was the last tour of India

Happy for him to bat higher!

A poor series?

If you're just talking about with the bat then yes, but that's only because he's been shoehorned into a slot he isn't suited for.

With the bat, obviously, given we're talking about the batting order.

Agreed he's not a 3, but to have that swift a fall over 3 tests (Batting 3, to 6, to 8) will surely wreak havoc with the seemingly delicate state our self proclaimed second spinner finds himself in.

Why do we have to have spinners nominated 'first' and 'second'? For whose benefit is it, and what does it achieve?

Bairstow averaged 34 in 2017 and 26 in 2018 across 37 innings in total.  That certainly isn't a record that would justify a batsman retaining a place in the side

So, the fact that three tests ago he was ranked #6 batsman in the world rankings?

He was never a number 3! So number 4 is where Root wants to bat and therefore that is a no go!
5 is Buttler and he has been excellent there so let him do his thing. Stokes seems to be nailed into 6! Foakes has made an unbelievable start batting at 7.

So where would you suggest Ali bats?

Shows you how much use the world rankings are doesn't it! Bit sad that Bairstow had to bring that up really.

I don't understand the confusion over batting order... Burns Jennings Bairstow Root Stokes Buttler Foakes Ali, bet all the money you like on that. I'd have picked Woakes mind...

Wasn't aware he had - I picked it up from the paper today!

2 (good) spinners now needed in the Windies, so a top-bollox keeper also needed, so Foakes is da man!

Bairstow should be in the XI, but he now needs to reinvent himself to fit in.

Interesting times - fitting about 13 bodies into 11 spaces!

Who do you favour in the spin off Cat? Misty eyed for the left armer harking back to the days of Phil Edmunds, who, like yourself, was not adverse to the odd surprise bouncer to show slow does not mean soft...

Or is Rashid your man with something different ?

Two into three for me is Leach and Ali....I like the balance but you would lose Rashids runs down the order...is that a consideration picking 2?

No, pick the best 2 bowlers. I agree with you Ali & Leach. I'd take Rashid on tour as the sub spinner though. Neither of the lions spinners really covered themselves in glory in the most recent match
