I am "zero" in the nets but love to play my shots in the middle.
I only practice defense in the net:
- Controlled leaves
- Forward defensive or well timed drives, no power just gentle glides
- Backfoot defensive or well timed punches, no power just gentle glides
- Compliment bowlers on good balls, and tell them how they can get me out
I adapted this approach based on Michael Clarke's comment that he daily planned defensive practice in the nets.
What does this do for me:
- Helps you watch the ball completely to bat or leave and watch hit the back net.
- Get in strong positions (attributed to Joe Root's quote from his Yorkshire days)
- Make clean contact (Joe Root quote, see above)
- Get your feet moving in the nets and before a game.
- Develop a sense of timing with
out exertion.
- Develop good muscle memory. Playing big shots exhausts your muscles and you leave nets with a tired body and muscles that've acquired bad habits.
For the life of me, I can't defend in the middle unless I pre-meditate. I move around on the popping crease and take full advantage of the wide open spaces around the middle than the constricted environment of the net.
As far as I can remember, I have never hit a big shot in the nets. I can't be bothered since the ball doesn't go anywhere.
