Hero in the nets, zero in the middle
« on: October 21, 2018, 07:52:25 PM »

Hi,
Just wanted to reach out to the community and ask if anybody else has had this problem and what did they do to solve it...i have been batting really well in the nets and not getting out but come match day, in the middle, my batting has been scratchy and usually i have been getting out before getting into double digits. Looking forward to your responses.

Thanks

advice amongst many other options is to bat is funds club or facility
To bat on a square a real pitch so you become familiar with conditions

There is a loads of others but that is a big.one in my opinion
No net is like batting on a pitch on square , firstly it looks completely different to a net

Do you bat in the same way in the nets?
Is the bowling of a similar standard and is the ball swinging/seaming in a similar way?
Are the pitches you play on good and true like the nets?
How are you getting out in matches? Too often the ‘net boss’ thinks he’s batting like Chris Gayle but actually most of his shots would be easy catches in the outfield.

When you are in the nets I suspect you may play a few dubious early shots which you later forget as you are hitting the ball sweetly.
So the moral is, are you playing yourself in properly and ask, are you giving yourself enough of a chance by playing yourself in.

I am "zero" in the nets but love to play my shots in the middle.

I only practice defense in the net:

- Controlled leaves
- Forward defensive or well timed drives, no power just gentle glides
- Backfoot defensive or well timed punches, no power just gentle glides
- Compliment bowlers on good balls, and tell them how they can get me out

I adapted this approach based on Michael Clarke's comment that he daily planned defensive practice in the nets.

What does this do for me:
- Helps you watch the ball completely to bat or leave and watch hit the back net.
- Get in strong positions (attributed to Joe Root's quote from his Yorkshire days)
- Make clean contact (Joe Root quote, see above)
- Get your feet moving in the nets and before a game.
- Develop a sense of timing without exertion.
- Develop good muscle memory. Playing big shots exhausts your muscles and you leave nets with a tired body and muscles that've acquired bad habits.

For the life of me, I can't defend in the middle unless I pre-meditate. I move around on the popping crease and take full advantage of the wide open spaces around the middle  than the constricted environment of the net. :D As far as I can remember, I have never hit a big shot in the nets. I can't be bothered since the ball doesn't go anywhere. :D

Better to be average or not very good in nets and great in matches

It's where it counts

Makes sense to practice defensive technique in nets

Easy to hit a lot of balls in nets and theres no pressure. In a game you need to stay in to get runs, theres more pressure/nerves and bowlers you wont be as familiar with. I found the trick to be having a process for every ball i face, since writing it down i get 50+ the majority of times(open the batting). I build on my list with new things to do and they become engrained, bit like nadal serving routine. Its hard to focus on more than one or two things consciously, so dont try change or focus on everything at once. Having a plan removes the nerves and pressure, and gives consistency in you technique allowing you to make tweaks.
My routine is something like middle gaurd, feet parrallel, bat back and not towards slips, watch ball like bowling machine zoning out from bowler/his expressions, front foot weight towards line of ball then back and front again, gloves through ball.

Main thing for me is not getting out, if i stay in ill get runs. If you can stay in but not hit runs then look at shot selection/variation.
If you practice on artificial and play on grass then grass you need to olay foward more, watch ball more, and wait for ball to get to you(ball slows up/moves)

As others have alluded to it's about your mentality in the nets vs out in the middle. Try and treat every net session like you're batting in the middle. Ask the bowlers where their fielders are, maybe even put some cones down to mark those fielders and then try to hit the gaps. Getting your net practice as close to real game situations as possible is only going to be beneficial once you get out there for real

Closely watching this thread for advise. This is a problem I have too.. I think it's just lack of match practice tbh.. I play around 4-5 matches the entire season. Planning to change that this season.

Quite simply :  Bat in the nets as you would in the middle.

Lots of suggestions here - it could be one or all of these things. It could be the lack of pressure, the lack of feedback from aerial shots, the surface that is totally different to real pitches. All of these things have an effect.

I'm afraid to say that 90% of net sessions are a complete waste of time for everyone involved - in fact in many cases for adult cricketers they're actively detrimental.

I play 20-30 games a year, but maybe have 2-3 net sessions.

Net sessions can be somewhat pointless if you are practicing and focusing on something specific but I see where you're coming totally and can understand why some ppl find them pointless

Thanks a lot for the great advice...Sorry for not replying individually to all the great comments. My situation is that I only get to play around 8 - 10 games in a year and so there is not much match practice and hence I have to rely on nets. Here are a few things that I am going to try:

1. Net with different players so that I can face as much bowling variety as possible.
2. Try out the "defensive net" technique suggested by @InternalTraining
3. @prim0pyr0 comments hit especially close to home. I am going to see how to work out the "per ball process"

Thanks once again...it really feels great to be able to throw this out and get feedback since I don't have any option for that within my team.
