England Team in all formats in English conditions......

Here is one for you chaps! With the possible inclusion of Stone and other bowlers, plus the real possibility of Jofra Archer being in the English squad from 2019......
There are a lot of questions abut how he would be fitted in to an already crowded and competitve ODI and T20 team? Also people seem excited about him playing in Tests.
So thought it would be a good idea to see how everyone sees the different format English teams in English conditions? So don't worry about Asian conditions and I didn't want to add further complications by having to include 10 spinners!  ;)
Just English conditions and who would you have in there? Template below.....

Combining my opinion with an emphasis on the actual current selection here - e.g. Curran has to play in tests because they're obviously not going to drop him, and no daft ideas like Denly opening the batting or dropping Root ;)

TEST TEAM:
1 Burns

Slight reservation over Curran as a bowling all-rounder as I'm not convinced he's quite got it with the ball at test level, but it's all going so well for him that who's going to be the one to drop him! Ali vs Bairstow a bit of a toss up so the incumbent gets in. Broad will be pissed off but that's probably a good thing.

ODI TEAM:
The first choice ODI side is basically set in stone, not difficult here. The 4 squad reserves for the WC would be Hales, Dawson and then two from Stone, Archer and Tom Curran.

So I have! Erm in that case he bats at 3 for hales how drops to the squad

Although hales could feel hard done by!

I have Archer in the squad and then it is a toss up between him and Broad

11 Willey / Archer

Again i have Archer in the squad - although i really don't want to rock the boat with the ODI side, one of the main things that Archer gives you is that he is a genuine death bowler, which is something this side has lacked in the past.

I actually think there is a genuine case for players like Root, Bairstow etc... to rotate playing T20 series, so they aren't playing every single England game.

On the basis of strongest sides, rather than sensible rotation policies, I would have:

Going to be honest here and say I dallied with a couple of alternative line ups - one without Jennings, one without Foakes.

ODI:
Bairstow

Woakes
Willey/T Curran
Archer
Rashid

T20:
Bairstow
Roy
Buttler
Hales
Morgan
Stokes
Ali
Archer
Rashid
T Curran

In English conditions I'd have Anderson opening the bowling in every format to be honest.  Possibly even someone like Onions who swings it round corners.  Root, Stokes, Bairstow and Buttler in all three formats as well.

Archer certainly looks like he'd be a useful quick on overseas tours, but compared to Anderson and Broad, and the other County swing bowlers I'm not sure I'd pick him in the Test team straight away.

I think what this shows is that we are building towards a group of players with a lot of variety and therefore have the potential to be successful abroad.  The last 15 years we have been very strong at home (someone with more knowledge than me maybe able to say when the last time we managed to win as many consecutive home ashes series as we have during this time) but since the loss of Swann we have lacked wicket takers in overseas conditions. 

It is very early days at this stage, but it looks like our hopes for our next trip to Australia won't be pinned on a bunch of mid-80s swing bowlers.  The flip side to this is that we may not be as successful in our own conditions

Not sure Archer alone would make us favourites to win in Australia or India tbh. We need more express bowlers coming through.

But one of the key things Smith has pushed is the idea that consistency of selection can be married with some horses for courses selections. So in Oz, a side might feature Malan, Vince, Archer, Stone and Jamie O. But then we come back here to Headingley in May and see Jamie Porter and Ben Coad with the new cherry...

Not at all, but having a couple of guys with genuine pace, variety in the spin department and a left arm seamer at least would give us s chance of being competitive

What does Joe 'averages 51 in ODIs' Root bring except runs? Even ignoring his bowling, I reckon runs is probably enough, especially in a team where we're so stacked with all-rounders that a bloke with 10 first class tons usually bats 11. Also if you don't pick Root, Hales comes in, who is less all-round than Root.
