Weight reduction
« on: December 15, 2018, 05:31:49 AM »

i am getting some weight reduced from my new AS bat, hopefully 4oz off from 2.11 to 2.7

The bat is big with 44mm max edges and 35mm max toe. So I think there is some excess fat

I have approached Cooper Cricket and Brisbane Bat Refurbishment. Anyone here dealt with them
before.

Need some guidance from people who have experience of getting weight reduced. I
Its a beautiful bat and don’t want it to be ruined.

Yep, 4oz is too much... I assume your comment  is based on your experience, is it?

Best option is to sell it as which ever path you do take it will cost you money.

Definitely, will sell it or keep it as it is. But I want to make it useable.

Interested in hearing people’s experiences who have gone through this process

I've had 2 ounces taken out of a bat and it was never the same

Unless you’re intending on turning it into a Harrow 4oz is a substantial amount of willow. If you’re still able to just return it then that’s your best bet imo

It’s virtually impossible for even the most skilled bat maker to take 4oz out of a bat and still maintain the integrity of the bat. Send it back or sell it are your only options if you’re not going to use it I’m afraid.

Looking at the photos you could lose a lot of weight from that toe - it looks so thick and almost unfinished.
That would change the pick up an awful lot so you may not need so much weight off as you think
That said I’ve had weight off an old GM Flare and it was never the same
A  bat maker’s judgement is the optimum bat trying to get out of each cleft - if this cleft was destined to have made a massive bat at 2.7 it would already be one and it wouldn’t have been quite so reasonably priced

Do agree 4oz is a lot to remove  but having reduced bats by 4oz including down from 2lb 11 to 2lb 7 ounce  for myself and others without it being detrimental to the  bat  by removing the wood first off the toe and then  evenly off the back until  wearing gloves the bats pickup feels right in the hands if your bat has a full back or minimal concaving a batmaker should easily achieve your required bat weight.

Which tool did you find best to use @Seniorplayer? I presume it was a pretty big bat in the first place!

4oz is a chunk of weight
But that toe looks ripe for a bit of weight removal
Then take the edges down, and re shape the profile
It’s gonna be a different bat tho

Talk to that J P Gavan guy, may be?

With the bulk in the shape of these monsters, I think it’s possible to easily take off 3 Oz

You start off from the bottom and chisel the toe down 18 mm flat all across thus removing the spine up to three inches from the bottom up. That’s about an Oz

Then you trim down the edges to 35 mm and reduce the bulk by scalloping and creating a reasonable concaving.

That’s about another 2 Oz

And you end up with a 2.8

Otherwise, hit the gym and build some muscles to be able to enjoy playing with this beast.

And finally, the best option in my opinion.
You can also use this as a practice bat in the nets. Many, many international pros use a much heavier bat in the nets to strengthen their batting muscles which helps them increase the bat speed when they play with their actual and lighter match bats.

Last year I sent my Kippax for 5 ounces weight reduction and it was fine. They made it into duckbill shape and it picks up so much better. My advice is don’t go for dead weight and try to shape it for better and lighter pick up.
