Bat Handle Repair & Splice Crack
« on: February 01, 2019, 06:29:24 PM »

I had a bat handle replace and the job is done cleanly. A day later, I noticed that there is a crack (inch long) on both (front and back of the bat) of the splice right where the tip of the new handle meets the bottom of the splice's V ( like so >- ). The handle seems fine and I don't think that the splice will split any further. Anyone has any experience with this kind of a split? Could it get worse? What's the best way to reinforce the willow and prevent further cracking? Thanks.

Can't be sure without seeing the bat  but it's Quite possible  the bat handle is overtight in the vee  if it is usually once there's a split   the more you use the bat the worse it will get.
You  could fibreglass   or Gorrilla tape it tight.

Yeah,  only thing I’d suggest would be tightly binding around bottom of splice.

You could also run some dowels through the handle/splice to give it some extra support as well

I second this. Whoever put in the handle, put it too tight.

@InternalTraining photobucket is working again and has the best app for posting photos to a forum that come out a sensible size

totally looks like the handle is too big for the bottom of the splice, i must admit i've never seen a crack like that before - would be really interested to see what ideas people come up with for a solution!!

Is it possible to take it back to where the new handle was done and ask them to sort it out for you?

I think the handle  as been knocked in as far as it will go ( its not flush with bottom of the vee ) and is to wide for the vee forceing a crack.

In engineering, we would drill a hole right at the bottom of the crack. It relieves the stress at that point and prevents it spreading...
