Too old to slide
« on: May 29, 2019, 06:15:49 AM »

So, I watch these youngsters slide and pick up and been wondering if I can pick up the skills without losing my knees at this ripe age of 36.

Tried YouTube videos but I am too scared to try in field.

My ground fielding is ok but my dives are more like "falls" and while I do end up stopping most of the balls, they come at a cost of serious grazing (not the food type).

Any tips on teaching this old (ish) dog to slide and dive will be most appreciated.

Fyi: I don't play football and have done any of the sliding stuff ever.

I honestly think that it’s a really natural thing. You can either do it or can’t, if you’re stopping the majority anyway I wouldn’t bother trying and I’d just keep your energy for batting or bowling

If it’s not something that is natural I wouldn’t bother. Not really worth the injury risk

I used to slide all the time when chasing the ball as it was quicker and I was a keen youngster, now unless the batsmen are really trying to push I don’t bother and just catch the ball up on my feet pickup turn and throw.

Not sure it's an age thing i dive  throw myself at the ball but have always done so but if it doesnt  come naturally instinctive  to do so wouldn't bother as you may get injured  also lots of outfields are to uneven to dive probably best to watch the bat and get inline with the ball with a long barrier.

after years of nursing a bad back and various knee injuries caused by keeping wicket and eating/drinking/smoking too much. I have accepted I cant throw myself around the field anymore, as im out of action for the entire week.

instead I have worked on my slip/gully fielding and made myself a first choice in the cordon

Wait until a training night/game when it’s wet and rained off and then practice them. Much more forgiving on a greasy surface.

I slide on the occasion when I feel there's sufficient benefit to warrant it (Boundary, Run Out). It often costs me the skin on my knees though.

Our ground doesn’t really require a slide - either the ball stops before the boundary or you’re not catching it!  :D there’s no point sliding for the sake of it!

If you don't know how to slide or are injury prone, I don't see any need to slide/dive or field like a youngster. As clubbies, we have to understand (and accept) that we can't do everything which is fine with me.

I (and my captain) know which field positions I do well at and I stand there. I stop runs and I take catches. I know over the years, my fielding technique has improved and the right changes happened after I accepted my strengths and lack thereof. That doesn't mean I slide, I don't. I can dive but don't unless I absolutely have to and the ground is soft.

I think sliding should be dependant on the quality of the outfield and whether its warranted to save runs etc. I'm 42 this year and still dive and slide in the outfield with no real problems, but only if it's necessary. I'd say unless you have specific injuries already, then you should be fine as long as you ensure your knee or studs don't get caught in the turf. Its not that difficult tbf.

Since when did 36 become “old”?? The NFL has players well into their 40s, and sliding on a cricket field is nothing compared to what those guys go through.

Be careful about how and where you slide ... but you’re young mate !!

Agreed, as I said unless you have specific injuries I'm not sure there's a problem.
