Ashes Starting XI
« on: June 20, 2019, 09:55:56 PM »

Based on nothing scientific, seeing as not many have got much 4 day momentum at the moment, who is your starting XI for the first test? Here’s mine:

Burns
Robson (delete as applicable)
Woakes
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes
Ali
Leach
Archer
Anderson

6 bowlers and bats down to number 8!

Burns
Roy
Ballance
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Butler
Woakes
Ali
Archer
Anderson

Broad or Wood could come in at anytime, Butler keeps. Not sure on Roy at all but I was struggling and thought why not put him up there and let him have a go. Ballance has earned another go with his form this season for me.

Burns
Roy
Ballance
Root
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes
Archer
Broad
Leach
Anderson

Not 100% on Ballance, but who else is putting their hand up the way he is? However, wouldn't be totally surprised if Roy batted at 3 and a form opener got picked. Wood/Woakes to push Broad hard for his spot. Bet Moeen gets picked over Leach...

England: Roy, Burns, Foakes, Root, Buttler, Stokes, Baristow, Woakes, Ali, Archer, Anderson (swap Foakes with Baristow depending on who is keeping, reserve players Wood, Broad, Leach, Rashid, young batsman or Denley)

Aus: Finch, Warner, Khawaja, Smith, Head, Stoins, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazelwood (reserve players Carey, Richardson, Harris, Maxwell, Coulter Niles, picking Finch based on his WC form and he has already spent considerable time in UK.  If he fails, Khawaja opens, with Maxwell coming in the middle or Harris replaces Finch)

Aus will look something like this

1.Harris
2.Warner
3.Khawaja
4.Smith
5.Head
6.Patterson
7.Paine (C+)
8.Cummins
9.Starc
10.Lyon
11.Hazelwood/Jhye Richardson/James Pattinson

Finch, Labuschagne, Wade, Shaun Marsh, Mitch Marsh and Stoinis with a look at the squad.

I dare say they won't pick an all rounder as that lineup bats well until 10 (if you pick Pattinson then they can all bat) with Smith and Head looking to chip in with good overs. Carey is stiff to miss out bit you simply cannot deny Wades phenomenal last 12 months in every form of the game (capped off with a 56 ball Ton for Australia A yesterday)

Burns
Sibley/Roy/Vince
Vince/ballance
Root
Stokes
Buttler
Bairstow
Ali
S Curran
Woakes/broad
Anderson

Who ever I have listed first when there options are what I'd take

I'd be picking a squad per test and having wood and Archer around with leach as well

I think the selectors will play is fairly safe in terms of bowling attack batsmen is anyone's guess, if ballance gets in we're going to be in trouble! Nothing has changed since he was last picked/dropped/picked again/dropped again

Was going to mention Sibley before he was just mentioned, the most successful and consistent opener so far this county season and in Div1 as well. Also still very young could be to much to soon for him but i guess you never know until you try and boy have we tried some openers over the past few years.
Still not convinced by Burns either to be honest.

Burns
Sibley
Bairstow
Root
Ballance
Stokes
Foakes (wk)
Butler
Archer
Broad
Anderson

Root is my only spinner as Aus have historically struggled against the swinging Dukes ball. This is my time but almost certain will Not be the starting 11 as Ali will no doubt keep his place and Foakes will only play if YJB is injured

Interestingly, I spent a few days at York CC this week watching Yorkshire vs Warwickshire, which threw up the two highest scoring openers in Div 1 in Sibley and Lyth.   Which just highlights a) how difficult opening in the county game can sometimes be and b) what a crapshoot selection becomes when these are the options.  Lyth is wonderfully talented but not an opener and Sibley...his style is crabby and stuck in the 1950s.  But undeniably effective.

I assume we "know" that the following will be selected, in one configuration or another: Burns, Root, Bairstow, Buttler, Stokes, Archer, Anderson and, probably, Broad.  That leaves two spaces in the top seven, and a slow bowler.  The latter is simple enough, in that it might well be Ali, but ought to be Jack Leach.  The two spots in the batting are far harder - who keeps?  Where should Bairstow bat? Could Root go up to 3?  And most crucially, who the hell can open with Burns?  I've tried innovative solutions, I've tried optimistic ones and I come to the conclusion that there is not a perfect fit.  So - until I change my mind again in ten minutes - how about:

Burns (has to be given a longer chance)
Vince (ahh (No Swearing Please), I hate myself for saying it - he can't look that talented and keep failing can he?)
Stokes (technically sound, and Leach in the side reduces his bowling workload greatly)
Root
Bairstow (play on his ego, offer him security etc)
Buttler
Foakes (keeps)
Archer
Leach
Broad
Anderson

Like all of us i think there are 2 things here - 1. The side we would like to see and 2. The side that will probably be picked!

The team i think will probably be picked -

1. Burns
2. Roy
3. Vince
4. Root
5. Buttler
6. Stokes
7. Bairstow +
8. Ali
9. Archer
10. Broad / Woakes
11. Anderson

The team i would like to see -

1. Burns
2. Sibley
3. Root
4. Bairstow
5. Buttler
6. Stokes
7. Foakes +
8. Archer
9. Leach
10. Broad / Woakes
11. Anderson

I wonder whether Sam Northeast might finally get a look in at number 3 - he is currently averaging a smidge under 60. Also there is Lewis Gregory who is taking wickets for fun - although there is always a medium fast seamer doing this etc.... but he can bat a bit as well.

So here’s my starting XI as it stands but also the changes I’d be musing over depending on performance in warm-up and the first test:

1. Roy
2. Burns
3. Bairstow
4. Root (C)
5. Buttler (WK)
6. Stokes
7. Ali
8. Curran
9. Archer
10. Broad
11. Anderson

12. Wood (in for Broad on a flat track)
13. Foakes (in for Curran/ Woakes and keeps if batting needs bolstering)
14. Woakes (in for Curran if unsuccessful)
15. Leach (in for Broad on a turning track)

He’s looked very strong this season

throw another name in the hat, someone who has looked very good this year (although playing in div 2 and at 5) is Billy Root.

Could we have two Roots in the side some the end of the summer?
