It appears that a few players in the World Cup have bats with what appears to be string binding around the toe - anyone know what that's for or why? Is it just to strengthen the toe? Never seen it before.

Got a pic mate? Could be the kinda thing salix do with a lot of repairs. They add a sort of cloth around the toe.

Can't find one at the moment, seems to be on the bats of some of the Asian players. Just wondering if it's to strengthen the toe or something.

Some players in the world cup seem to have their bats "strung" at the bottom. Not seen this done before.

It's just a binding, similar to the binding on a handle. It's usually used after a significant toe repair, think along the lines of old school bat tape, the upside is it can be more solid and protective than bat tape, the downside is that it's heavier, nowhere near as convenient and some would argue quite unsightly.

It might be a preventive measure, during wc you players would like to continue to use the same favourite bats,
But if it's a large one then it's most likely been binded after toe damage.

It�s an Asian thing, strengthen the toe. I�ve done it on a load of bats, just use the same cotton/binding as the handle.

I do alwaysuse biding in my repairs... as for me gives a better protection than tape... but my quesstion is... do biding can help strengthen the toe if there no damage on the toe of the bat???

No It's more to do with prevention of toe damage.

If it works, just wonder why UK bat makers don't use this method then?

Perhaps it's needed on bats made there. Asian toes are usually weaker, as they press the middle hard and leave the toe soft in order to get a big bow.

More power than a completely broken toe, maybe. But not more power than it started off with.
And why do you need power in the toe?
'Extra strength' would be more accurate.

I thought that too. Either way it doesn't look great and seems to press the willow in and dent the edges to me.

I remember my dad doing this to repair bats a long time ago but not really in the same way, was more just like the binding you'd see on the handle but around the toe area to add support. Have seen others do it too, but bever seen it done to a new bat tho.

At his request Repaired a teammates bat last season with binding around the toe it certainly impacts on the ball.

It has a nice retro look. Like the repairs people did in the 60s and earlier. As people have said, it's still used a lot in India to repair cracks. But I'd be concerned it might affect the ping in the repaired area.
