Jos Buttler (wk) - ok
Ben Stokes - ok
Mark Wood - ok

Can add archer after a rest to these three for the ashes

Burns and roy will need runs, sibley can be considered harsh done by, for me he deserved a run out against Ireland and an ashes start. I think the selection was between him and denly, denly is in possession and averaging 56 in champo this year so he got the nod. If he struggles sibley to come in and open roy to 3

all in all not bad but not exciting, we could just as easily get rolled as smash them, should be an exciting series - im not confident at all though

Seems like theyll use Lewis Gregory like a watered down version of Ben stokes, hope he gets a good go though. Very good player

Its a somewhat odd squad - aside from anything else, they have no option but to play six bowlers in the Ireland game.  In addition, I'm not sure what benefit Bairstow playing gives (he's played as much cricket as Jos and Stokes, and Foakes could have done with the run out).

On the other hand, it resolves that Roy will play in the Ashes, and that Jennings won't.  It also implies that Somerset have done something to annoy the ECB bigwigs!

I suspect Anderson will sit out, along with one of Woakes and Gregory.

Can’t remember who opened with burns last match it wasn’t Jennings I don’t think.
Looking at the squad Roy must be opening and unless I’m missing something Denly is playing and batting 3 just ahead of Root.

But I may of missed something obvious

It was Jennings.
He was dropped for the Test before and Denly opened, then he got recalled and Denly moved down to number three.

Weird squad that. Woakes to fill the glaring hole at 5?

The assumption is that Woakes Curran and Mo will play to beef up the batting.
Jason is going to open with Rory.

To be honest the top three are going to have to be massively on it as Tim Murtagh will be a huge handful.

I don't like that squad at all. Only 5 Specialist batsmen and lots of bits and pieces

Sibley has got to feel gutted really.

The Ireland squad only having 5 batters is because of the resting of players. Do you then just pick someone on a false basis to play 1 game? Or see if someone like Curran or Woakes can bat higher up?

13 picked.... Is Anderson actually fit to play? Mo, Woakes and Curran have to play to bulk out the batting. Broad will play. So that leaves 2 from Gregory, Leach and Stone.

If Anderson isn't fit -
Burns
Roy
Denly
Root
Bairstow
Mo
Woakes
Curran
Gregory / Stone
Broad
Leach

Given that Burns, Roy and Denly are not shoe ins, yes, you give someone the chance. Sibley, Rhodes, Malan, Northeast, Stoneman, whoever. Or you take Foakes. He batted 3 in the Lions game for a reason...

And then bat them at 6 though? Because with Roy and Denly playing the powers that be have obviously given them 1st crack at the top spots. Then Root and Bairstow bat 4 and 5.

Agree with others we seem a batsman short, at least one. Denly 3 and could well have an Ashes spot. Experienced player at 3 with two young batsmen seems a good idea.. Don't subscribe that after 30 there's no place in the side.

For what it's worth I think Malan should be around the side this summer, but I would play Foakes and Bairstow as a specialist bat.

That won't happen thou, I reckon we are still no closer finding the best young batsmen not in the team.

We won't find out against Ireland but be interested to see what the forum view is.

I think

Sibley
Livingstone
Clarke
Hameed
Lawrence

But is one of them so much better than the other

Seems a bunch who are good but nothing outstanding.
