Is again a number 3, spent most of his short career at 5 hasn’t he?

I feel like England have missed a trick by not picking Sibley or Hain for this match. With so many quick scoring middle order players England need guys at the top of the order capable of grinding out slow runs to see off the new ball.

I'd love to see a team of: Burns, Sibley, Hain, Root, Roy, Stokes, Buttler(WK), Woakes, Ali, Archer/Stone/Wood, Anderson/Broad for the first Ashes test

Roy's clearly a ludicrously talented player but he looks so much better when the ball is a bit worn and not moving anywhere near as much, same as Root really. Burns and Sibley are both good for absorbing early bursts and Hain is now ready to become Trott 2.0

So Burns, Hain, Sibley and Roy all get an Ashes gig before Bairstow??!

Surely Alistair Cook is still the best opening batsman in England?

Aside from 2016, Bairstow averages 29 in the rest of his career. Which is pretty pathetic.

Get him out of retirement to open with Leach next week!

They're all top order batsmen, Bairstow only had a little go at that before he bottled it and threw his toys everywhere.

Can't believe this from Leach, what a hero. Clearly opening in tests isn't as hard as Alastair Cook would have you think!

to everyone saying Burns technique is an issue,

think back 3 years, most of you were saying he must be picked, he's scoring runs for fun and his technique wont be an issue...

and no he is not worse than Jennings far from it, just in bad form, he'll be given the start of the ashes at least
Jennings with his shortcomings at least as shown he can scores 100s

Burns might’ve scored loads of runs at first class level but what top class bowlers has he been feasting on? Hardly any. Burns is pretty similar to Ballance. Awful technical ability and champion at first class level. But inept against world class bowlers.

3 years? More like 6 months!

I did predict how this forum would go with Burns.

The underlying problem is the dominance of short-form cricket. But no-one will admit it, because money is king.

Root sells Denly down the river. Bairstow needs to show something here
