Burns a lucky boy with the lack of review but.. he’s making it count and appears to be actually playing nice long format cricket. Keep going lad.. 8th test for him and avg 22 so after the ashes he really needs to have his stats up to 35+ at least really.

Roy.. sigh.. shock horror.. just shouldn’t be there sadly. I’m sure he will ‘come good’, sorry come off at some point but he just wants to go at the ball ans we don’t need another 5/6

Another umpiring error. I've lost count now...

I watched the highlights yesterday, and of the 7 “errors” only two (siddle lbw that he edged and wade lbw that was plumb) seemed like obvious errors. All the others seemed too close to call and on first viewing seemed like reasonable decisions.

I think we see something different here, his dismissal today wasn't just a hard handed push.

he was trying to wait and get the ball down it bounced and carried.

yes OK i admit is wasn't butter soft hands but ti wasn't a flat foot hard hand push either.

He is clearly trying to adapt admittedly that should be for surrey not in the test game but come on lets back the lad and not just criticise and say hes a white ball slogger when he gets out.

Our openers (read Roy) are allowed to get good balls, they're allowed to nick them occasionally and get out, that's cricket. its not because hes made his case playing one day stuff

Thought Paine got his bowling combinations wrong in the middle session. Siddle, naturally, is a very economical bowler and he should've be paired with Lyon much earlier. I know the aussies are obsessed with pace but aside from the new ball I don't see why Paine always bowls Cummins and Pattinson together. You can quite easily rotate the two fast men in bursts whilst Lyon and Siddle dry up the runs.

Anyway Root looked solid today. Unfortunately missed a century.

Should sides just let root get to 50 and wait for him to get himself out just after that?

Delighted for Burns...the coaching manual has many good guidelines for us ameteurs but it’s not the be all and end all of batting

Unconfirmed reports that Cameron Bancroft was seen going into the umpires room with a Toolstation bag after the close of play yesterday!  ;)

Australia haven't had much luck today - neither Root nor Burns looked at all solid - but this change of ball has certainly made things happen.  Small margins at this level
