^ Sometimes teams just don't have the ability to fight even though they want to put up a "show" and fight.

I have been saying this for some time but guys like Root should focus on their batting and breaking records. Captaincy should be left to gruff individuals like Stokes - I think he will make a fine captain.

Becoming more and more convinced that Butler is just not suited to Test cricket in the same way I don’t think Roy will become a good test player.

Someone said the other day at my club that they would rather have Morgan in the side in the middle order as he is also a proper captain and would release Root of the pressure. Not a bad call I’m starting to think with this batting line up.

Positives so far is that Burns is looking more comfortable at the moment and Denly also looking very good but keeps coping a Jaffa.

Agree with all of this Chris, poor Joe Denly looks to have got a proper decent nut the last 3-4 times he's batted and with a bit more luck would have scored more heavily.

Jos and Jason Roy are top drawer ODI players but I'm not sure either are best suited to test cricket as they have such natural attacking styles. It's obvious Roy has been brought in to give the top order some David Warner type fireworks but I think Warner is able to reign his attacking instinct in a bit and knows where his off stump is.

I'd love both to be a great success at test cricket, but as a similar type of player, for all Adam Gilchrist's swashbuckling style he knew perfectly well how to dig in when needed and when to counterattack.

We haven’t even lost this yet(Aussies 80 all out would change people’s tune) but why not play selection. It’s cbf

Burns is looking like he’s getting to grips with this level. Confidence growing. He looks like he’ll have to rely on pure grit over talent for runs, but can see him scoring big against some of the lesser attacks than Aussies have.

Roy is not a test opener. Feel sorry he’s been thrown into this. Robson, Lyth, hales were and still would be doing a better job than the Roy, Jennings, stoneman attempts did.

Root. He’s stil our best player, but something shcanged, maybe it’s thw wc hangover, or him being constantly present in all formats. But he’ll click at some point...... hopefully....

Denly, he doesn’t have a W.C. hangover, so stick with him. Like burns he looks a tad more comfratabel every innings. Weather he turns out to be good enough or not who knows.

Buttler stokes bairstow!!! Pick an order and stick to it. God sake.

Buttler, I know why he’s there, he was better than a lot at tests before the W.C. build up, but not since. Maybe he needs a rest, maybe the W.C. hangover is strong.

Stokes is the boss.

Bairstow...... depends how he goes here. Him and buttler a toss up to drop. Could be both.

Bowlers be fine.......... I’d still drop broad.

So if we get thumped here. And it looks likely. I’d go.

Burns
???
Woakes
Root
Denly
Stokes
Foakes
Curran
Archer
Leach
Broad

Honestly no idea on who to open. The ones we dropped who could have been decent have dropped off, or retired from red ball.
Is there any point throwing in sibley  or Crawley? Nope, could kill them before they get going.

Been thinking this for a while in regards to Morgan as he would probably average 35-40 as his batting is better now than when he made his debut, plus he is a far superior captain to Root and on the plus side Roots average would go back up again.

And stop this nonsense about Morgan playing Test cricket. Morgan averages 33 in FC and 30 in Tests eg very mediocre. He’s woeful against pace.

I disagree it’s nonsense, all the others avg 30 odd in red ball cricket, he is a natural captain and a better captain than Root and our best batsmen has been hampered by captaincy, I’m sure his stats show that.

I’m not saying it’s the perfect answer or is even on the cards but that’s what forums are for, sharing opinions.

For me unless something changes 2nd innings Butler is dropped, Roy drops to 5 and a proper red ball opener comes into replace Butler, I’m not bothered if that’s Sibley, Crawley, whoever but you can not keep being 20 for 2 or 30 for 3 inside 8 overs every innings and always expect, YJB, Stokes, woakes and the rest of the middle lower order to bail you out. 250-3 is perfect at the end of a day when you bat first in a test match.

Natural captain in which way? Morgan was hardly setting the world alight with his captaincy until we started playing on very batsmen friendly pitches. There's no evidence whatsoever to suggest he'd be a capable red ball captain.

Morgan is basically Dhoni MKII, good white ball captain, leave the red ball stuff to the proper players.

And that’s your opinion and your entitled to it mate. The only evidence is the change that has seen England become world champions from group stage knock outs and from interviews etc the players have serious respect and admiration for him as a leader of men.
