Two summers running Root been exposed as massive hype job. Kohli last year and Smith buried him this summer

Harsh. I'm not sure anyone has put him in the Kholii/Smith class of late. Root is a class player who isn't in great form at the minute, so trying to grind it out. To say the above is somewhat disrespectful in my opinion.

I feel for Root as he really can't win. Bats 4 and he should move up for the good of the team. Moves up (effectively opening most of the time) and he's not good enough. Added to that he's lost his leading bowler for the series, had Roy opening and doesn't have a class spin option either.

Let's not forget how good this Aussie attack is too, it's high class. Credit where its due.

First and foremost I might be harsh but there's been plenty of cricket pundits saying that Smith, Kohli, Williamson and Root are the cream of the class which I agree with.

Should Root bat 3? Most certainly not. But should Root as captain select the right players for the team? Most certainly yes.

We've tried all these makeshift openers why isn't Root pushing for Sibley? We've seen Burns come of age in this series. I don't get the obsession with needing a slogger at the top of the order. Then you pick someone from CC that actual bats at 3 to do so in the Test side.

What I hear from most is its Smith, then a gap to Kholi, then Williamson, then Root generally. Not sure who puts Root up there and I'm sure I've never heard Root say it.

I agree with the point on the opener. I'd said before I'd have had Sibley in myself and dropped Roy, with Denly at 4. Not sure who's pick Roy was, so surely its speculation to say that's all on Root? Smith seems to have earmarked people he wants in the side regardless, like Butler. So who has the final say?

I'd rate Williamson higher than Kohli.

It's been strangely quiet on here today, and what conversation there has been has somehow been about Kohli...

Is there not an Ashes Test currently going on, that England are fighting tooth & nail to save?

It's been about Root tbf. I think either everyone's not wanted to jinx it m, or are resigned to the seemingly inevitable!  :(

It comes from around 2015 when all 4 were relatively young, averaging around 50 and seen as the future greats of the game. Smith has moved into another gear since then, Kohli and Williamson are still class and Root has fallen away (Very interesting analysis on Sky yesterday morning about the technical differences in his batting between 2015 and now)

It's good to see England battling hard here with good contributions from less likely sources. There's three blokes in this team you'd expect to be making the major contributions to keeping the Aussies out, they're the three with the highest average this series.. Burns, Root and Stokes. Yet all 3 have scored just one run between them and the "passengers" have stood up to keep the Aussies at bay.

It’s usually because we don’t have anything bad to say.

Roy got a peach and was fighting.

Buttlers got 30 of a 100 so definitely not playing white ball.

We don’t tend to moan when stokes fails as he carries us most of times.

At least we're fighting but it's a tough ask against a quality attack on a day 5 pitch.

Been some decent nuts, but I think Roy's still struggling as a test player unless he sorts the defensive flaws hew has.

I think this Aus side are good enough to field first.

Well that's likely that

As much as I'd love to see England hold on, Broad is a walking wicket as soon as anyone with a bit of pace comes on :(

I agree - too much pessimism on the forum. The only difference between the two sides was the second best Test batsman in the history of the game...no shame in that
