6.15! On day five. 6.15 on day five! Yet the Aussies are apparently awesome and we are dire.

We are dire, but the Aussies have smith. Yet They still struggling to finish us off. Without smith it would be closer.
Even without smith they should have beat us easily but couldn’t.

So either they aren’t as good as people think, or we aren’t as bad as the England fans on this forum keep making out.

They prepared everything for this tour. We did absolutely nothing and picked players who had no right to be there or batted in positions they shouldn't be.

Only ones who come out of this with any respect are Broad and Stokes, the rest has been abject

As an England fan it's the hope that makes the defeat that much more painful :(

Now we've lost a home Ashes series, I'll ask the forum this:
Was the focus on dominance in ODI cricket since the last World Cup worth the decline in the Test match arena?

Yes, Rory Burns has been an embarrassment at the top of the order, hasn't he...
And Denly, for all the stick he gets from the "experts" on here has fought admirably and performed well without being spectacular.

Not sure you've been watching the same series as everyone else?

I have watched Burns for God knows how long. I just expect better from him.

Denly shouldn't be there in the first place. Root should have been the man at #4, not shoved up to accommodate him. A couple of decent knocks, but just nowhere near the quality of an international batsmen. Come on.

Seriously dude, where do you put your keyboard when we  are doing well as your always absent?

Pretty sure Rory burns as had a half decent series.
Denly made two fifties despite being messed about.”your three, no your four, no your opening”
Leach has a following after his last two games......(granted for his batting).
Jofra no showed this test but was decent the two test before it.

But yeah just stokes and broad.........

Are both teams likely to make changes for the last test?  If Lyon’s finger is shot will Aus play extra bowler?  If yes who gets dropped.  England had too many players that could be dropped but they will not make any changes.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it. Burns looks to be a decent find and could have solved half our opener conundrum. If you expect better or not he's doing a decent job at the top of the order, something England have been caring out for since Strauss retired!

As far as Denly goes, you're knocking a bloke for being selected and playing a couple of decent knocks? He isn't to blame for his selection, Ed Smith is. Denly's making the best of the situation he's been thrust into, whether you feel he should be there or not.

Yeah I'm pretty much with @WalkingWicket37 , not too disappointed to be honest. I thought it was a 50/50 series with them having the better bowlers, which normally means a series win.

I wanted us to really fight and I think we did that, Smith is absolutely the best and you could say his runs made the bowlers job much easier. He is a class player there's no doubt

Denly and Burns, yep pretty good I think, Denly taking one for the team moving up and showed his experience, not a world beater but we don't have many of those available. burns showed an openers mentality and grit and that's what we need. His technique is a bit all over the shop but he knows his game and it's runs that count.

I know I have said this before but for me we are not far away. The middle order might need thinning out. I don't know if bairstow, butler can fit in the same team as has others have mentioned they both do one job.

I'd like to see Foakes in but that may be unrealistic, but one of the above being dropped might leave a place for a specialist batsman or Sam Curran to come in.if that was a batsman I'd like to see Ollie Pope be given time to develop.

Bairstow I'm afraid as has been said before is no longer top order. There might need to be a shoot out between Roy,bairstow and butler to take the team forward.

It's not all doom and gloom by any means, the Aussies are a very good side.

Best team won the series no doubt in my mind.

Burns, Denly, Stokes, Broad and Archer can't really be knocked. Overton and Leach have battled hard but not convinced their bowling is good enough at Int level. Roy shouldn't ever have been opening and Root should be at 4. Anderson has been a huge loss too, he'd have given us control and would have given Smith more problems early in his innings. Could have evened things up.

We now need to build for the Ashes in Oz. We'll need to find another opener, a number 3, and maybe replace a number of bowlers. We need to plan now and get this right.

All that said, I'm not sure the Aussies have been that much the better 'team'. Credit to them and they deserve the win but we're heavily reliant on Smith, along with a great bowling unit. The rest of their side hasn't really shown up (Marnus apart). Both sides are far from vintage really.

Onto the Oval to try and at least tie the series.

Congrats to the aussies. I personally feel aus have been much better throughout the series in the bowling department, I feel selection has cost us big time, and I feel like we missed jimmy massively. I would like to see a completely new outfit for the 5th test, I'd like to see Foakes come in, Roy dropped, sibley in, bairstow dropped and although Denly has done OK this series, I don't see him as a long term option so he unfortunately misses out. I'd bring pope in to bat in the middle.

I think Denly was always a temporary player...I'm not so sure now if that middle order does see some changes, let's say Sibley does play..that's two newish openers

Denly might...fill a gap at 3. Root back to 4.

Interested to hear others on Root, I think he should bat 3, he's clearly does not want to.

He's our best batsman by miles...I wonder if he will revert back to 4. He's shouldn't be captain I don't think but realistically he will be.

We need his runs more than anyone, if he feels better at 3 is it time to dump the Ashes experiment(3) ?
