Let's not get too despondent here: it's 2-1 and England dominated the rain affected fourth game. There are factors - poor selection on our part and there being a couple e of very influential tosses, but the big differences have been the form of Smith (who may be a pretty low human but is an incredible bat) together with the absence of Anderson, who was our best bet to dismiss him.

England's selection is screwed. Our top seven has three players desperate to impose themselves, one whose batting is shafted by being captain (cf Hussain, Vaughan, Strauss, Cook...) and two new lads.

Moving forward, only Burns, Root and Stokes should be confident of their places. Denly has nothing to be ashamed of but is not a long term option, and at least one if not two of Buttler, Roy and Bairstow need to go for the balance of the side. In South Africa, Malan should play - he should have here - and I'd like them to give the next opener a dead rubber.

My side for the Oval:
Burns
Sibley
Malan
Root
Denly*
Stokes
Bairstow
Jamie Overton or Saqib Mahmood
Archer
Leach
Broad

The asterix is because I really wanted to go Bairstow at five with Foakes to keep.

I agree - too much pessimism on the forum. The only difference between the two sides was the second best Test batsman in the history of the game...no shame in that
And that they picked (it got close to anyway) their best batting line up while we went with bunch of Ed Smith hunches who average 30 in FC cricket.

I’m going to throe something into the mix for the anti burns and Denley brigade. Apart from Smith those two are no better or worse than any batter in the Aus side.

Apart from Kohli at test level they are no better or worse than an other Indian test batter.

Apart from Williamson they are no better or worse than any of the Kiwi batters.

Better than all of SL, WI and SA so maybe the standard of test batting has dropped??

I think Denly has done a great job since coming into the side and being a true team man, played a masisve part in the 3rd teat win, played a great hand today to drag the game into the final session. Yes he could do with a TON and getting some bigger 50’s but has done a great job of occupying the crease.
Burns I think has done enough to now be our opening bat for some time, not sure who alongside at the minute but should be Sibley, Roy needs to focus on red ball cricket next summer and earn a test spot based on red ball stats not white ball.
Personally for me Butler and YJB need to be binned off for a while like Ali and earn a spot back.

Bowlers have been superb all series. Now we need to tie the series and restore some pride after after two gutsy 2nd innings performances over the past 2 tests

I'd just like to mention how absolutely brilliant Smith has been in this series. After all that trouble, to come here and have 82 as his lowest score after Archer sconned him is nothing short of genius. It's his world and we're just living in it.

For me the England Oval team would be:
Burns, Sibley, Denly, Root, Stokes, Pope, Foakes, Woakes, Archer, Leach, Board

I understand Denly is stop gap but he has done enough to retain is position over Baristow, Roy or Buttler.  England will not make 4 changes next week so the only change that is likely to happen is Roy being replace by Pope or Sibley.  I hope they pick Sibley, otherwise they are going to ask Pope to bat at 3 and he will be batting out of position.  Why have multiple people batting out of position.

Denly has done as well as he could have, but that isn’t any great shakes. Nothing against the bloke but if we’re going to pick someone probably not good enough they are better served being 24 than 34.

Would add he should probably get the nod at the oval as there’s 3 other blokes less deserving of another go in Roy, Bairstow and Buttler.

Burns
Sibley
Denley
Root
Stokes
Pope
Bairstow
Woakes
Archer
Leach
Broad

Roy dropped. Only other options I toyed with were Foakes in to keep and bat 7, with Bairstow 6 and Pope missing out, but I'd like to see how Pope goes and think 6 would be good for him initially. Or Butler keeps his place and we save Pope for next summer to give him a go and let most of the players who've lost this test have a go at levelling the series.

So let me get this right, Burns and Denly are equal to the likes of Pujara, Rahane, Taylor, Nichols, Markram?

Think you lost that argument

From https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/27570206/headingley-broken-lot-teams-tim-paine

"My dream was to come here and win an Ashes. I certainly didn't want to be the captain winning the Ashes. It doesn't mean any more or any less to me. I have said a lot of times my part in the this team is just one job that many are doing, I just get a lot of the credit I suppose but it is something we share around between the players and staff. I am just happy to be a part of it. I could have been working at Kookaburra [in 2017], so this isn't bad."

I like Paine better and better after every interview.

Yeah totally. I think he must know he is not the best player but his job is to get the best from his players.

He took over in a difficult time where they need a culture change.

The Aussies have used a squad of bowlers really well, Cummins has bowled a lot but it’s been  shared around pretty well. No one had looked overworked

Roy has to go
Bairstow has to go
Overton out for Woakes

First two simply must be dropped

Buttler to go for pope too

Yes Smith is the reason the Urn is coming home with the Australians, but Ben Stokes is the reason England have looked like a team who can compete with Australia. Massive respect to England for fighting that hard yesterday, also to Stuart Broad who has been a one man army with the ball for England.

The Australian bowling has been amazing, Cummins is the #1 in the world for a reason, Hazelwood not far behind and Lyon has had a tough series, but he is the Goat for a reason and will bounce back. The main difference for mine is that the Aussie bowlers operate as a team, Broad just doesn't have that around him.
