One worrying thing for Root is an increased propensity to whinge. He called the Ireland pitch sub-par (!!!) and then the reaction today after getting out was weird- balls seam around in England, so to tap the pitch like that as if He was so unlucky to get a seaming delivery was just bizarre. Seems like the pressure is getting to him - as captain you can�t be whinging so much...affects everyone else.

He is a bit of a luxury player but he just shows more mental maturity that the likes of Curran, Bairstow etc.

He's noticeably tightened up during this series to be fair, defence looks far better now. Went to the last test and he actually looked our most comfortable bat by a distance.

Should be captain. Will free up Root and as keeper his place will always be guaranteed

Since his recall last summer, only Root has made more Test runs for England than Butler. He would be my captain and keeper for the winter tours

Can�t think of a worse description of �luxury player� for Butler than in the last 12 months, he�s the complete opposite of luxury how he has knuckled down when we needed him.

Luxury player would apply to those being carried who don�t contribute enough.

Don�t want to sound like a broken record but England will have to choose between Butler and Baistow to get a specialist batsman in.

Don�t even think it�s a close call between the 2 myself over the last 12-18 months of test cricket.

Ive never bought into the Curran hype personally, hes done well in the chances hes been given but has done nothing to indicate hes going to be a mainstay of the team. My issue was more the entire approach he took to his innings. He seemed to have decided to hit out or get out from ball one which is taking the piss from someone who is in the side as an all rounder batting at 7. Butler is also a white ball hitter and he at least made an effort to construct and innings by choosing the balls he would go after

If they have to choose between Buttler and Bairstow then it's inevitably the latter who probably moves for Foakes. I would still like more from Buttler, even with 'only Root got more runs than him last year' I'd still like him to crack on and get a few tons here and there; 1 in 62 innings with 14 50s seems a bit tame. Granted he has to bat with the tail a lot of the time, but as per today's innings he's more than capable of doing it; just seems to have Root's problem of 50 then failing to convert.

Something that Sky was showing at the end of the day where they interviewed Buttler, one of the stats that was thrown up was # of times batsmen have played 100 or more balls. Buttler was number 2 with 9 and Kohli was 1 with 10 innings or something along those lines. It would be interesting to see that stat for all of England batsmen compared to runs. In my opinion, if you are going to drop Buttler, you need to drop Bairstow also.

His record is good with the exception of the tests he has played against Australia.

The reason to make him captain is not because he�s a genius tactician .. it is to enable Root to score.

What happened to Northeast and Livingston as the next cab of the assembly line right around the A tour in WI last year?

Northeast has had a decent summer. He's scored 3 hundreds and 5 fifties, and is currently third leading run scorer in Div 1 of the Championship with 930 at 54.7 (Sibley - 1,000 at 55.55 and Ballance - 969 at 51.0 are first & second)

Livingstone hasn't had such a great time of it in Div 2, 437 runs at 43.7

Livingstone had a torrid year in 2018 having taken on the captaincy at Lancs and was part of batting unit than got the Club relegated to Div 2 despite a very strong bowling unit.

Having stepped down as captain for 2019, he has had a stronger year. His average is good but having missed the start of the season due to the IPL and a section mid-season with injury, he hasn't played enough games for a big return of runs.

Overall, he is better suited in my view to white ball cricket, but there aren't a lot of players around in England with a FC average over 40 right now. England are desperately short of guys to bat in the top 3 though and Livingstone isn't equipped for that role.
